Potty training here we come

I kind of have no choice but to buy a potty this weekend. He's been following us into the bathroom trying to use the potty for a while now. Last night after his bath he kept saying "pee pee!" and trying to get on the toilet. So I helped him up and he tried three different time to go but couldn't because I didn't have a little toilet seat so he was just hanging there mid air. Soon as I gave up he peed on the floor.

He seems interested and has been telling us when he needs "to go."

But damn I'm not ready. I mean if we start this I need to switch him over to a toddler bed right? So he can get up and go when he wants? That means more baby proofing of the upstairs. Should I buy pull ups or go straight to underwear? All this seems really early...but I feel like it wouldn't hurt. Maybe just start with before bed? That's when he seems to be most adamant about it.

JMO, If he really seems into it, focus on day potty training first and don't worry about night if you don't want to. And thereby, keep him in a crib if you want. DS1 is 3.5yrs and still not 100% night trained, even though he has been day trained for a long time now. Night is a whole other ball of wax, at least it has been for us. (Full disclosure, this is coming from a mom who probably isn't going to do any PTing with DS2 unless he is almost 3 or he's putting himself on the potty, whichever comes first)

  • We've started potty training, loosely. I let her take the lead so that I'm not in the bathroom with her for 4 hours a day.

When she wants to use the bathroom she says potty and makes something that looks like the more sign. She's fine overnight in diapers.

When she pees on the potty she gets to 'read' a magazine, flush the toilet and wash her hands along with lots of praise and clapping.

I agree with pp about focusing on daytime first. And before bed as part of the routine is something we do as well.
  • Ugh...DD has been taking her diapers off and giving them to me saying "pee!". When I checked on her very early this morning she had taken her diaper off and flung it across the crib. We set the potty chair in the living room the other night and let her sit on it to try it out. No pees, but she likes the chair. Im going to start taking her and the chair to the bathroom with me and just see what happens. I had NO INTENTION of starting all of this anytime soon, but if she's ready, I guess she's ready. I guess I just feel like this is such a huge milestone that I wasnt prepared for so soon.
  • Yeah I think I'm just going to focus on day potty training and use diapers at night. Dude does not need to be wandering through the house at night yet ;) I'm going to let Kieran take the lead on this. If he tells me he needs to go then I'll take him to the potty and we'll see what happens.

  • My almost 3.5 year old dd is not night trained either, so like pp said, I wouldn't worry about it.

I have introduced DS to the potty, but he screamed like I was attacking him, so I decided to wait a bit.

We're only day training for now. He is such a horrible sleeper to begin with that there is no way I want him in a toddler bed and able to get up. Plus I just don't think he's anywhere near ready for night training yet. Days are going great though, I'm so glad we're doing it.

  • Just this afternoon DD2 said "Pee pee!", pointed at DD1's potty chair, I did a quick strip down, she sat, she peed.
I also kinda think she's ready, but we just fully day trained DD1 2 months ago. I'm not really ready to PT DD2 yet...

But it's laziness because I love diapers. A lot.

  • My dd is pretty verbal and understands a lot.  She is showing interest so I am going to give it a whilr and see what happens.  Just wading in slowly and sort of just take it slow....we have had a potty chair for awhile and I am going to get another one for upstairs and some underwear in the next week or so.  We CD and although I am a huge advocate and it is truly not much more difficult than disposables, I am just getting tired of diaper laundry and spraying poop.  Again, it is not a huge deal, but if I can cut down on this whole deal by a few months I will gladly do it.

We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

  • Aaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnndddddddddddddddddddd, dd just pooped while laying on the ground coloring.  It came out of the diaper, down her leg, on her foot, on the onesie, on the carpet.  It required a bath for clean up.  I sent a picture of it to my DH before grabbing her up and said "this is why you get to deal w/ all s___ when you are home" :)  He said he understands why I am so keen on potty training right now.
