Sleeping Arrangement.

Sorry if this is already a topic, I didn't find one like it..

How long after baby comes home do you keep them in your room? Or do you? Do you put them in their own nursery room right away?

Just curious.

Re: Sleeping Arrangement.

  • We are planning for as little time as possible in our room... but, we are first time parents, so who knows how long that would be. Ideally, I'd like to have our guy sleeping in his crib around one-month. We will be using a rock n' play for sleeping in our room.

  • I'm a FTM so this is only a "plan," and not actual experience, but we're planning at least the first 3-6 months in our room in an Arm's Reach Co-sleeper.  I don't have an official plan of when we'll transition, I'll play that part by ear.  I want to try to put her down for naps in her crib as much as possible, so it won't be a completely foreign place when we're ready to switch to night time sleeping there too.

But who knows, this could all end up out the window!  We'll see what happens.

  • DS slept in our room for almost a year (in his crib part of the night and then co-slept the rest of the night).  He was an awful sleeper so we were just trying to get through each night.

This time, I think the baby will sleep with us for the first 3-4 months (in a co-sleeper or PNP) and then move to her room.  I really don't want to repeat what we did with DS!

  • I have bedshared with my both boys till about 4-5months, then transitioned to their crib in our room 6-7 months, then finally into their own rooms by 8-9 months. Probably will do the same for #3.

  • With our first it was 11 months. As soon as we moved him into his own room he slept so much better, he was waking up several times a night in our room. This time we only plan to have her in our room for 6 months at most.

  • When we had DS we lived in a one bedroom/studio-ish apartment so we shared sleeping space until we moved. He was just shy of 5 months. He was also sleeping through the night and bottle fed and I think that makes a difference.

DD will share a room with us probably until she is at least 5 months. I'm giving breastfeeding another shot so hopefully that works. The kids will be sharing a room when she transitions out of our room so when that transition happens will depend on how good of a sleeper she is, too.

  • We kept our daughter in our room with us in a bassinet next to the bed until I went back to work. So for about 12 weeks. Then we started putting her in her crib and using a monitor since she didn't sleep through the night until almost a year. I don't think she even noticed the difference.
  • STM, but unless DD feel alseep in her bouncy chair while in the living room, she was put to bed in her crib.  she was sleeping through the night by 10wks and we were able to get some rest.  her bedroom was only about 20ft or so away from ours so it was a short walk but I spent the first 2wks sleeping in the recliner in her nursery so my DH could sleep without constant inturruption.  prob will do the same this time

  • FTM so my opinion is subject to change post baby-birth, but we are planning on putting baby in our bedroom in a pack n play bassinet until about 6 months.

  • DD slept in our room until she was about 2 months old. At that point she outgrew her bassinet. We figured out she was waking herself up by hitting the side of the bassinet. When we moved her to her crib she started to sttn.

  • DS slept in the RnP in our room for about a month and then we moved him into the crib in his room. Once we did we all slept better. We plan do to the same thing this time around. IMO - having the baby nap in the crib helps a lot for when you completely move them into it. I figured that out with DS.

  • Mine bed share for quite some time. My girls transitioned to their own beds with no problem at 22ish months. My son, he went back and forth between my bed and his from about that time, too. But since it was just me and the kids a good chunk of the time it wasn't really an issue.

This time, we'll do a combo of bed share and co-sleep for at least a year, since my babies continued to nurse every two hours even after a year.

However, I'll probably put a Pack 'n Play in another room when we want undisturbed alone time.

  • FTM, we have a tiny house so the plan is for the baby to be in the crib on day 1. It's literally 10 feet from our bed. But we have bassinet just in case.

  • My DD slept in our room in an RNP for about 8-10 weeks. By the time I went back to work at 12 weeks, she was sleeping in her own room.

That said, I have good friends who have put baby in their own room since Day 1. It's whatever works best for you! I'm lazy and would rather BF in bed without having to get up and walk to the nursery and sit in the glider.

  • I typically have my babies in a RNP, PNP, or bassinet next to my bed until 3-4 months at which point I move them to their crib. They usually start napping in their crib around 6 weeks to make the transition is smoother. My kids share rooms, so I tend to keep the baby in my room until he or she is STTN so those that are sharing a room with the youngest do not get their sleep disturbed.

  • DD slept in the RnP right next to our bed until 3-4 months before we moved her to the crib. Even then, by the 4 or 5am I usually brought her into bed with us so I could nurse while sleeping. We'll do the same thing with this baby. I'd say she was fully sleeping all night in her crib by 6 months.

exactly this. i'm such a light sleeper i think every little baby twitch and sniffle will wake me. we live in a little apartment so even in his/her own room, baby will be about 15 feet away. one month seems good to me since that's about the time DH will be back at work and i prob won't have additional help around. hopefully i'll get a teeny bit more sleep this way (maybe? haha)
  • DS was in our room for about a year. We transitioned him out which let us all sleep better around 8 months I think but he had to move back in for a while when MIL moved in for a few months. Now we are in a 2br so DD will probably be in our room for about a year until we move to a. 3br. I'd rather her room with us than DS who will be 5. He is such a great sleeper I don't want to mess it up!

  • It completely varies and is up to you. With DD I had an arms reach Co sleeper and thought we would Co sleep for a while. That didn't happen. At the 2 week mark I couldn't take the constant anxiety and waking up at every little grunt so I moved her to her crib where she slept ever since. We were both happy with that.

This is what we are doing as well. Just remember that there's a weight limit on the bassinet so they may outgrow it by 6 months (just found this out so I gotta share)

  • We are planning on him being in his crib in his room from day one. Our bedroom is two feet away.
  • I'll be a FTM, but since I plan to BF, I'm going to have baby in our room until she can sleep at least 5 hours on her own, or throughout the night without needing that late night feeding....however long that takes. Naps in the crib/nursery during the day. :)
  • DD was in our room for about 11-12 weeks and then we moved her to her crib in her own room.

I am planning to have this LO sleep in our room for about the same time and am probably going to bedshare more than I did with DD.

  • He'll be in a rock 'n play within arms reach from the bed until he starts waking up 1-2 times a night.  I read a statistic about the decrease of SIDS if you share a room with the baby, it was enough to make me insist on having him in our room.  He'll take naps in the nursery, but if I'm sleeping too, he's right next to my bed.

  • I'm definitely in the minority, but we're not planning to have the baby in our room at all...

This is what we planned with our first - in her crib, in her room. We just couldn't leave her alone at night, and spent the first night sleeping in the chair in her room. Went the next day, bought a bassinet, and kept her in our room after that for a few months.

  • Umm, let's put it this way, my 1 year old is STILL in my bed. We are discussing moving her to a crib or maybe to a toddler bed in our room. The 3 year old still tries to sleep with us and is successful if she waits till 2-3 am to jump into bed.

Funny part is, baby starts out in their own bed (co sleeper or bassinet). Later when they are larger and can roll easy, they migrate into our bed so I can nurse them at night and still sleep... Cause I do like sleep.

Lol sorry! I was gonna make a new topic but usually get a lashing for not searching it first, so I searched it and remembered I made this topic so I just started where I left off with a new question.
  • I am a ftm as well. The plan is to keep baby in the room with us at least for about 6 weeks. My husband has 3 weeks of bonding time but I am not sure how it is going to work with baby in the room once he goes back to work. We will play it by ear and see what works for us past that point.
  • I'm hearing impaired and feeling a bit anxious about keeping the baby in a separate room. My H is not hearing impaired, but is a heavy sleeper. My goal is to keep baby with us until we establish a routine, and go from there. I have a bassinet and plan to get a rock 'n play, and let baby decide which he prefers. The crib will be set up in nursery for when he is ready. I hope to avoid co-sleeping, but if that is what works, that is what we will do because I plan to BF and I enjoy sleep!
