I signed up for the car seat class at our hospital because it was free and I love all things deal/bargain/free. Well, not all things, but you get the idea. Anyway, I didn't think it would be that useful, but I was wrong. They gave us dolls to practice putting the baby into the seat and then helped us install the base in our car. I honestly think I would have been super overwhelmed if DH and I had tried to figure this out alone since neither of us is particularly good at that kind of stuff (we're lucky to get an Ikea bookshelf together). They also went over the seat belt laws in both North and South Carolina since we only live ten minutes from SC and told us about the latest safety recommendations and studies.
So anyway, I recommend the car seat class for FTMs if your hospital has one!
ETA, we bought the Britax B-Safe car seat and it's very user friendly- so far, I recommend it.
