The Christmas gift thread got me thinking... What kind of lights do you like on your tree? There seem to be very strong opinions on color vs all white.

I have a running internal argument with myself on color vs white.  We currently have white and I think it looks classy, but I also looove color, especially the newer LED ones.

I think the solution is two trees.  DH is a grinch, though.  I bet I can con him into a "grown up tree" and a "kids tree" though!
This exactly! Except my husband isn't a grinch, so I think having two trees would be no problem. Once we get a bigger place, that's what I'll do. :) I love the idea of a kids' tree!

  • I grew up with color and loved it as a kid, but now I only ever use white on my tree

  • I grew up with color, but I love how all white looks. I'd really like to do both though. I keep trying to convince DH to let me do an all white tree in the family room, and once we finish the basement, a colorful kids tree there!

This. I agree with PP that white is classy. We make up for it by using lots of shiny, sparkly ornaments from Pier1. I always buy new ones just after Christmas so I get them for half off and can look forward to putting more on my tree the following year.
I can't wait for Christmas this year!! It's going to be even more fun than when I was a kid!

  • This is a bit of a bone of contention in my house. I like the color lights and husband likes white. I think the only solution will be a fancy white light one for DH and a cute fun colorful one for me and LO when she gets bigger and we start accumulating cute baby-made ornaments. Until then...its white lights.

  • I do white lights with colored ornaments. Then I let my son do a two foot tree in his room with colored lights and whatever he wants to decorate it. Works out well for us!
  • We had colored lights growing up, so that's what I do.  I like the look of the all white ones, it's pretty.  But the colored ones make it more magical for me.  I know...lame.

  • Well we don't get real trees (allergies) so I have a fake tree that has white lights already and then I add color lights.
  • I like white lights generally speaking, especially for outdoor decorating. I also like themed trees decorated to the hilt like you see in stores. My favorite is my gaudy gold tinsel Elvis tree. I also have a smaller pink tinsel cupcake tree, a skinny black Nightmare Before Christmas tree (with orange lights), and my main tree was a standard fake fir with white lights and a snow bird kind of theme with owls, peacocks, silver, turquoise, teal, green, and white. I only put up 2 usually. I think I will probably go on to do a fancy themed tree in the living room, and a tacky real tree with rainbow lights and all the sentimental clashing and homemade ornaments in the family room. Kids like rainbow, and I want Jack to have the tradition/experience of picking out a real tree, decorating it, and the memories that go with sentimental ornaments, and a place to proudly display the macaroni and cotton ball ones he's made.
  • We have two trees.  One fake with colored lights all our sentimental ornaments, and the other is a live tree with white lights done in all blue and gold ornaments.  I grew up in what we call an "elf in a blender" (c9s on every edge of every surface of the house, including indoors along the ceilings, about 40 different setups of blowmold plastic characters in the yard, 6-8 christmas trees and enough Christmas knickknacks to stock a walmart) house and DH grew up in a "christmas is classy and understated" house so we try to bridge the gap.  We have the two trees, but we also line our entire house and fence in colored lights, have a plastic creche in our yard, and a plastic santa on our roof.

Additional question for the classy Christmas ladies- did you help decorate the tree growing up and will you let your kids help?  DH had never decorated a tree before we moved in together.  His mom always did it and the kids weren't allowed near it except on Christmas morning.

  • Every year has been different- sometimes I do white lights and all silver, gold, glass ornaments and the next year the same with red and other years I've done all color. We are getting married in the backyard this year around Christmas/NYE so I will probably do white this year. Baby can have his own little crazy tree in his room and decorate it when he's older.
  • I've never had a tree as an adult- hoping this will be the first year!

  • Depends on the year. Sometimes we do color, other times white.

  • We use red lights and black/ white ribbons! The real tree is the 'fancy' tree and then there was small colored ones in kids rooms growing up.

  • I like getting and smelling a real tree, but I hate decorating and cleaning up after them
Bath and Body Works Fresh Basalm candle or wallflower.  Smells amazing, like having a real tree in your home.
  • Color of you have kids. White If you want a classy tree. Ours well probably be completely gaudy with flashing multi color lights now that we have kids.

Real Tree, both colored and white lights, no theme!

This. Though the theme could be clearance orniments!

Edit: and you forgot the bubble lights!!!
  • Warm White Christmas lights all the way! It's a cabin country Christmas over here think Martha Stewart ;)
  • I love red and white lights...haven't been able to find them in a while!
  • Growing up (she still does...) my mom would wrap colored lights around the trunk with with on the branches. I love the way it looks!!

We currently have a fake tree with white lights but almost half the lights have stopped working so I want a new one that you can choose white or colored!

  • SS, because I mix it up from year to year. We have so many ornaments, I pick a theme and then pick what kind of lights. Last year was silver and gold, so we did white lights. I think this year in honor of LO we will do all of our childhood ornaments, so probably colored.

  • Haven't had a tree in years. I am the Grinch.   But I have red Christmas lights up year round, for mood lighting.
  • Depends on if I'm trying to do some sort of theme for our tree that year or not. ^^;;
