Formula - Poop - Help!

Hi Ladies!

Wondering if any of you might have any advice to offer. My poor child cannot poop to save his life! I have tried 4 different formulas - Enfamil Newborn, Enfamily, Gentlease, Enfamil Prosobee (soy), and now Similac Soothe (which I chose since it says it has a pro-biotic in it, though I suppose they all might). He is getting one ounce of pumped breast milk with each feeding, and 2-3 ounces of formula. He will go 2-3 days without pooping if I don't give him prune juice, and even that takes upwards of 24 hours to help. :-/ I've also tried using a rectal thermometer to stimulate the bowels as well as laying him on my legs stomach down. In addition I've tried gripe water and mylecon drops. So far, nothing is helping. :-( TIA!

Re: Formula - Poop - Help!

  • Have you thought about alternating bottle of breastmilk and formula? That's what we do, no idea if it would help but I know after a full bottle of BM my DD takes a nice big poop. Instead of 1oz with each feeding, could you try doing a 3-4oz BM and then the next feed a full bottle of formula?

  • Is he uncomfortable? Our pedi told me not to worry unless it has been 5 days of no poop (I was worried about only one poop per day). He said it was normal to see 1 poo/day or every couple days.

Also, since he is getting some breast milk, find a good, high quality probiotic for you to take and he will get the benefits as well.
  • Your pediatrician should give yo permission to use prune juice or apple juice to help with constipation (less than 3 bowel movements a week)

  • Good questions. First, yes, he is MISERABLE! :-(

Second, I have not tried alternating BM and formula feedings. I only get about an ounce of formula every 3 hours when I pump and only have a small frozen stash so I am not sure I have enough to try this. :-(

And yes, my pedi has given me permission to use prune juice to help. Other than that, her only recommendation was to try different formulas.

    I'm lurking

when it comes to pumping have you tried to stay hydrated? Drink plenty of water, try eating oatmeal or oatmeal cookies (or special cookies/teas that help milk production) when pumping, try pumping 5-10 minutes past when you stop seeing milk. Also try holding your LO, smelling him, listening to his cries or recording his cries and listening to them. You can also press the letdown button which can spur on milk production.

When i was pumping while LO was in the nicu I'd pump every 3 hrs for a half an hour. I don't get a whole lot of milk but I get roughly 4 ozs, 2 ozs per breast, which is about how much she eats per feed.

  • We have pooping issues too. He just started probiotics and finally pooped on his own. We use natures way powdered probiotics.
  • @Mamanorris81 - did you have to get your pedi's approval for the powedered probiotics? Where do you get them? Do you just put them in the formula bottle?

  • Is it possible you're switching formulas too quickly and therefore not giving him time to adjust and see if the switch works? We do formula but haven't switched around so I'm not sure how long it would take, but I can imagine it taking at least some time for his digestive system to catch up and adjust.

I was going to say the same thing. My boy had a really bad spot of not pooping during a time when we weren't sticking to a certain formula. After a few weeks on similac sensitive only he started popping once a day.

  • I got them from Wegmans, they were in a small refrigerator in their organic section. Our pedi thinks it a good idea and was supportive of it. Good luck!
