we switched kiddo around 7 -8 months. it was christmas time and we got some good deals on convertible seats. T will use his convertibles and he will switch into a 5 point harness booster, so we will again wait until black friday or holiday sales to snag 2 of those big kid seats so everybody can make the switch. that will put T around 8-9 months old.
I don't plan to until she's hitting the weight limit, but she's long, so I guess if she starts getting too big for it length-wise we may have to sooner. We have the Britax B Safe and the limit is 30 lbs - she's 12 lbs now.
ETA - looks like the height limit is 32", so she'll probably hit that before the weight limit. She's 25" now, so we still have awhile.
I'll switch around the holidays as well, if not sooner. I've been looking at the Evenflo Symphony DLX from Target and if it fits in the car, that's what I'll get!
I thought you waited until the weight limit too? I didn't think we would need to be thinking about this purchase for awhile. He's only at 14 lbs but is kinda long.
You can keep them in the infant seat until they hit the maximum height or weight (whichever comes first) but some people switch sooner because the carrier aspect of the infant seats become irrelevant once baby + carrier = ridiculously heavy to lug around. As it is now, I usually take DD out of the seat and put her in a wrap when we go anywhere because she can't stand being in her seat most of the time.
I will keep DD in her infant seat as long as we can but she was already 24" at 2 months and has grown like a madwoman since then. She is already in 9 month clothes now and has not hit 4 months yet. So I don't think there's any way we'll make it past 8 months or so in the infant seat.
Just because you don't carry them in the seat doesn't mean you can't keep them in it. I rarely carry it anywhere but in & out of the house.
Very true. My mom still uses ours for now, but she physically cannot lift DD in it, so she can just leave it in her car instead of having to take it out when we come pick her up. It's easier for us this way.
We had a combi shuttle 33 (33 inches and 33 lb weight limit) w/ DS and he stayed in it until 18 months, but he's little. To give you an idea at his 2 year appointment he was 31.5 inches and 27lbs.
He didn't hit either the weight or height limit, but we finally switched him b/c he was getting really hot in that seat for some reason. We switched to a maxi Cosi pria 70 and I love it. Easy to latch, has the wing things filled with air on the sides of the head, very comfy padding and a nice cup holder. It goes up to 40 lbs, 40 inches RF, and up to 70lbs, 43 inches FF. I drive a corolla and one of the selling points for me is that this is a smaller convertible seat than a lot of them out there, so for me this was a good fit b/c it wasn't a huge seat but allowed for extended RFing.
For DD we have a chico key fit (switched over from DS's car seat for a variety of reasons). That has a 22 lb limit, but she's also tiny so we'll just keep an eye out for the weight/height limits and watch her comfort in the seat. We'll probably do the Cosi Pria again, either DS's seat or a new one.
In looking at car seats I now always look at the car seat lady's reviews:
We will get another Clek seat, the Foonf like we have or maybe look at their new smaller model. Our babytrend is 30lbs or 30" so we have limited time since DD2 is 99% for height. I've been hoping to put it off until we move, but we may have to break down and get one before then.
I wish I had only bought a convertible. We rarely use the carrier, just in and out of the house and into daycare although I used it more in the beginning. We will probably at least buy one around the holidays if sales are good and transition whenever she is an appropriate size. She is currently 25.25" and 15 lbs.
We just switched at 4 months to the new Clek seat, the Fllo. Sometimes I miss being able to just pick up the infant seat with him in it, it was pretty convenient, but he had less than 2 pounds to go in it so we had to switch. He seems to enjoy his new seat
We just switched today. I just went to babies r us to see what fit in the car because I knew it was something we needed to start figuring out because she's long and our focus has a tiny backseat. We ended up buying one and I was excited to see how she liked it so we already switched over.
I got chicco nextfit. It looked huge but it fit the same as her Infant seat. The passenger seat has to be pushed up a little but it works. The Graco size4me/mysize fit about the same.
