flip flops for toddlers?

have any of your LOs worn those little toddler flip flops with the heel straps?

Do you like them?  were they trip hazards for new walkers?  we're headed on a beach/pool vacation and I feel like LO needs some kind of sandal, but I'm wary about these being stable enough for her since she is still a wobbly walker.  thoughts?  or other pool shoe suggestions?

Re: flip flops for toddlers?

  • @Pinkie78  what are the "baby water shoes" you have?  does he use them both in and out of the pool?

  • I would not use flip flops on a toddler.  My 4 year old has his first pair of flip flops (with a strap) and I still rarely let him use them.  On top of not being supported, the toddlers tend to stub their toes in flip flops.  DD has a pair of regular crocs with the strap across the back.  DS had a pair of crocs that are more like a shoe (although I am not sure how small those come).

  • Ditto water shoes.  We got them for like $8 at Target for DD and Babies R Us for DS.  They both have flip flops but do not walk very well in them.
  • Agree with the water shoes. We have flip flops, but the sole is so stiff he can't walk well (my LO is a good walker/runner, so it's the shoes, not him). We have these water shoes and have used them at the beach and they are great: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CP8AV9A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

  • We did get some for DD from Old Navy. She loves them and hasn't had any trouble with tripping. The only problem we have is that she loves to take them off and insists on putting them on by herself.

  • I'm with @Nicb13 - don't see the harm in flip flops, and not a fan of crocs...for anyone. :P

I have a pair of old navy ones for DD, but so far she's only worn them in pictures.  That's just because they are about a half size too big for her right now, though, but I hope she grows into them before summer is over because I think they're adorable.  She has had 2 other pairs of flip flops with hard soles, and she walked fine in them.  She was confused about having something in between her toes at first, but she got used to that.  We have a pair similar to the Kohl's ones posted above for use at the lake (the closest we ever get to the beach :)) and she wears them walking around where there are often rocks/mud/uneven ground, and in & out of the water.

No, flip flops are awful for toddlers. They cannot walk in them properly and they look ridiculous. We used crocs at that age for pool/beach situations.

Want to talk about something that looks ridiculous? CROCS!!! I can't stand those shoes on adults or kids ;)
I used to think the same thing. I still don't love them, but we bought a pair for DS and they are great playing in the backyard shoes. He loves them and can usually get them on himself. He has worn them "out" once or twice on quick trips, but I still prefer socks and regular shoes most of the time.

  • I just always see kids under 18-24  months having an awful time walking in them, falling/slipping, etc. And yea, they look silly to me, but that's my preference.

Flip flops with the back strap are not much different than crocs.  Crocs do protect the toes. At the Y most of the toddlers wore flip flops with straps on the pool deck.  Nobody was falling or slipping.  We do only wear the flip flops at the pool.  At the beach we wear open toe Tevas.  They dry easily and the sand falls out.

  • I bought flip flops for my then-15mo new walker in May and only now do they stay on her feet and not trip her up. The linked shoes were much better and also good for general wear. https://m.nordstrom.com/Product/Details/3828718?categoryid=b60139477|f8000845

  • I tried to get flip flops for my 14 month old (he started walking at 8 months) but his feet are to fat from top to bottom for most of them.

I bought flip flops for my 15mo (started to walk at 9,5mo). He likes them and walks just fine. We only use them for pool/beach. No issues here. We are "no crocs" family.

  • I don't like flip-flops or crocs for new walkers. I got my daughter a pair of Saltwaters (the kind with the more rubbery sole) and they are awesome! She wears them every day, even into the water at the splash pad. I love that they are cushy for her, but not at all slippery (which is my worry with crocs). Amazon has them for $20 sometimes
