Heart Racing??

Im 31 weeks pregnant and have had a picture perfect pregnancy so far. For the last few weeks ive noticed moments where my heart will race really fast all of a sudden but I'd take a few deep breaths and it would stop. I asked my doc and she said not to worry as long as I dont have chest pain and aren't short of breath. Well last night it was so bad it woke me up around 1:30am. My heart seemed to be beating really fast all night and this morning.. I have had anxiety problems in the past so of course this has freaked me out. I feel fine now and heart isn't jumping out of my chest but I feel like my pulse is still higher than normal. Can anyone sympathize? Is this normal?

Re: Heart Racing??

  • I have this often too. My midwife ruled out pre-e and said exactly what @Nicb13‌ said...it's likely just extra blood being poorly redirect ly momentarily. However, I'd mention it to your provider just in case.

She also suggested that it might actually be a panic attack, even though I've never had one before. She suggested recording what I'd eaten (in case it's a blood sugar response), taking my heart rate when it's happening, and looking for patterns. Occasionally for me, I feel like my hearts racing but it's actually the same beats per minute as usual and could just be weird anxiety.

    I hope you feel better!

  • Thank u girls :) This makes me feel a little better. Its just scary when your body starts acting weird!! I did eat a bunch of cake before bed.. hmmm!
  • Sounds like heart palpitations. Totally normal during pregnancy. I typically get them when I'm just sitting at work. However, if yours are lasting longer than a minute or a few minutes, I'd definitely call your doc.

  • Thanks. I agree definitely going to talk to my OB at my appt on Thurs!
  • I've had some of that too. I think it's just normal pregnancy stuff. It feels different to me than a panic attack, which I used to get quite frequently. I hope your OB has more answers for you!

  • I get this, too... for me it feels more like a pounding heart than a racing heart. I do think it's just all the extra blood flow getting the better of me momentarily. I had it with my son, too.

I have to have an echocardiogram later this week to make sure my heart is healthy (family history of heart issues that could impact my pregnancy) and I definitely sympathize with heart worries! What you're describing sounds normal to me, though.
