Potty training toddler with a baby??

Ugh. It's time to potty train my 2-year-old and today is our first day. Just going straight to underwear and we'll try constantly. This is tough with a baby who needs me so often! Anyone else doing this or have done it before?

Re: Potty training toddler with a baby??

  • I did it a few months ago. I know it's not everyone's favorite thing to do, but I kept the potty in the hall way, right by the living room so he could go and I could still feed the baby, change diapers, etc...
It just wasn't practical to drop everything and put B on the potty in the bathroom.
We made sure to high five everytime he used the potty and made a ridiculously big deal everytime, he got super excited and was so proud.

We had to do the no pants approach for the first 3 days, he still won't poop on the potty (too scared), but he is accident free for quite a while now.

Started this a couple months ago. With LO it wasn't really an issue, other than if she needed to eat (we ff) and DD1 needed to go potty. I'd just have to put LO down and she's have to wait. It was fine. DD1 will be 3 in October. We did underwear straight away and use jelly belly jellybeans as rewards as well as a ticket chart I found online. Worked very well for us. She has only had 2 accidents and honestly loves to use the potty. We use a travel potty for when we are out and about. We still put diapers on her at night, even though she always wakes up dry and I put a water proof mattress pad over her sheets. I guess I'm just scared of her having an accident and having to clean it up at 3 am. I was so scared to start but I guess she was ready. I think thats key. GL!!

  • Done it.  DS officially became potty trained in about April.  I knew he was ready because he was starting to ask to use the potty even with a diaper or pull up on.  So I just started putting him in underpants and asking him frequently if he needed to go.  Eventually I just stopped asking him because I knew he would tell me.  It went really well!

  • I'm with you, @bunnyfungo‌ Plus she uses it as a stalling technique before nap and bedtime.

  • I am having the worst time with DD right now. She's 2.5 and has absolutely no interest in using the potty. I had her sit on it a few times, never really went but cheered til kingdom come if we heard a sprinkle and then now she just refuses to sit on it. Ugh. I don't want to pressure her because she'll just push back (she's super stubborn) but at the same time it's like when will she come around? I tried using treats, stickers, etc., nothing. And she doesn't want to wear big girl panties at all. Guess I shouldn't stress it too much. It's not like she'll be walking down the aisle in diapers right? I'll jump for joy the day she asks to use it. Envious of all you mamas having luck! ;)

@ezelinski‌ it's ok- it will happen. She might just not be ready. My daughter went on the potty randomly before her little sister was born. That was since she was about 20 months. Once DD2 came, she wanted nothing to do with it. Then this summer I just had a hunch she was ready to try again. I would give it a break for now and then try again in like a month.
Also, what do you use? We started her with a separate little potty, but the kids at her home daycare were using one of those separate lids you can put on and off the toilet. She much preferred that one, so the other one just sits on her bathroom floor and she uses it for her dolls. Maybe next time change that up?
  • Did it a few months ago as well.  She went naked for a couple weeks with the potty seat in the living room for convenience.  As she got the hang of it, we moved the potty seat to the bathroom and then eventually she went to the toilet.  It was not easy, and I think if I had waited it would've been easier.  It sucked at the time, but now that it's done, I'm glad I did it when I did.

  • @wildhoney4508‌ Thanks for the encouragement! I actually have both mini potty and toilet lid and she is I different to both. Sometimes she'll sit on the mini potty for a hot second, and now she doesn't at all. I guess I'll take your advice and give it break. I have a hunch nagging a 2.5 year old isn't the wisest decision so I'll just have to go with the flow. Literally. ;)

We are also doing this now- DD #1 just turned two this summer and had shown a lot of signs this spring of being ready... but then DD#2 was born and our first girl had some regression and wanted to be a baby again, etc....  We had a really good streak the last two weeks of July and then I went back to work and the kids are in daycare/preschool and the use of the toilet has suffered.

We just keep trying.  @wildhoney4508 - we also use jelly bellies, how funny!  And tons of praise, high fives, etc... My mom also got her two awesome books that she LOVES to have us read and I think they've helped.  One is called Princess Potty and the other is Big Girl Panties (although I hate the word panties, ugghhh).  I'm sure they have 'boy' versions of these.

Good luck!  It has sort of sucked a lot in this house lately, cleaning up poop and pee from one kid or the other, but it's getting better.

Ds1 has pretty much potty trained since ds2 was born. For a while we kept in in diapers but put him on the potty every 1-2 hours. Then when he was doing well we put him in training pants/underwear and did the same. Now he usually says when he has to go. Baby just has to be put it n crib or playpen when I need to help ds1. I feel bad when he cries and I can't go pick him up, but it can't be helped :-/ I almost forgot, we did a sticker/stamp chart also which really helped!

  • First day was very good. She went in the potty all day (tried every 20-30 minutes) and that includes 2 poops. She only had one accident. Then I had to leave in the evening and she had 2 accidents with DH because he always waited too long. She didn't go on the potty for him at all. So I'm a little ticked at him and hope it didn't hamper our progress. Thankfully I'm not going anywhere tomorrow.
  • I'm still having trouble with my 4 year old. She was potty trained for pee after 3. It was just like a light switched on and it was so easy. It'll come, if they aren't ready.

We are having problems getting her to poop on the potty. She refuses and I've tried everything.

  • @jazzyexpo Does she poop in her underwear or does she have pull-ups/diapers that she goes in? A girlfriend of mine made her 4 year old hand wash the dirty underwear in the sink a couple of times (she rewashed them later). After that her DD preferred to poop in the potty than wash poopy undies. A bit of a different tactic, but it worked for them.

  • DD1 is going to be 2 in Nov, but showing signs of wanting to pottytrain (obsessed with her diaper...I mean OBSESSED!) but I'm the one dragging my feet about it.  Did you all just decide one day, "Today is the day"?

She went once in her underwear. Usually it's been a pull-up, but I've stopped putting them on her. She will just hold it otherwise. Having her wash her underwear is a good idea. She is making progress slowly. She would never even sit on the potty for poop. Now she at least sits there, even if she doesn't go. Her pedi thinks she's just used to doing it standing. She told us to just keep encouraging it.
