Sandbox Sand

The landscapers are putting in a sandbox tomorrow. They said they use treated lumber and just fill it with mason's sand. Whether or not treated lumber is bad seems to be up for debate. Landscaper says it's fine (of course).

As far as sand goes, I've been online looking at sandbox info and reading all kinds of info about silica dangers and whatnot. I am okay with regular play sand, and not having the super expensive "safe sand." Landscapers say mason's sand is the same as play sand. Online it says it may be more dusty and therefore more dangerous, but they can do it quickly and cheaply vs. us having to go buy our own sand separately and transport it in 50, 50 pound bags. Anyone know what you have in your sandbox and whether it seems to be "too dusty" or not? If you did buy play sand, do you know the brand and whether you liked it? There are all different ones out there.

Re: Sandbox Sand

  • I just asked, we have play sand. DH didn't know the brand.  Whatever was cheapest at Home Depot.

  • Maybe I did the math wrong! I should try again. It's a 6x6 box, 10" deep. I'll try again.

  • We got play sand from lowes. Our sandbox holds 3 bags. I'd like to see the sandbox that holds fifty 50lb bags!?!?
I'd also like to see the badass sandcastles one could make...... :)

  • Ours is mason sand. My mom has play sand. I find both equally dusty. But Ds likes to mix some water from his pool in once and awhile and that keeps the dust down.
