? For those that supplement with formula

I'm looking for what methods have worked for you ladies to supplement with formula and waste the least amount of breastmilk possible. Since returning to work (12 hr hospital shifts) I have been 4-6 oz/day short of what LO eats while I'm gone. I've been using my freezer stash, but there are only 12 oz left in there so my option seems to be to supplement with formula. I'm an EP'er btw. He doesn't seem to notice he's drinking formula if I mix it with his BM but if he doesn't finish the bottle I have to toss it. Anyone have any good ideas? Thanks!

Re: ? For those that supplement with formula

  • I was lucky and DD took one bottle of formula a day with no adjustment period. She has pumped breast milk for her other daycare bottles and is breastfed when she's with me. I've heard others say they gradually increase the proportion of formula if their baby won't take straight formula at first.

  • I have not supplemented with this LO yet but with DS I had to start not long after going back to work. I mixed BM with formula and gradually increased the formula ratio until it was mostly formula.

Maybe start with smaller bottles, like the least amount he normally drinks. Or, for example, if he always drinks his morning bottle then mix that one with formula and if he only sometimes finishes his late afternoon bottle then leave that one all BM. Does that make sense?

  • I don't mix the two- I either do what the pp said and give one bottle of formula or at one feeding do two seperate bottles- one of BM and one of formula (2 oz each)
  • we just gave LO straight formula and have had no complaints. We started with just the normal kind, and DH uses what BM I have managed to pump the day before, then once that runs out uses the formula. I have also started supplimenting at night because my supply has dropped off.

Our pedi said to do separate bottles if she'd take so she 'remembers where the good stuff comes from.' She wouldn't take the straight formula, so we've been doing 2 oz formula/1 oz breast milk twice per day to get her into it.
  • I'm supplementing and we do separate bottles. She gets pumped milk first and them formula so she's getting a total of 4oz a feeding. She only gets about 5-6oz of formula a day and I'd rather have to toss that than toss breast milk!
