Rolling over-sleeping face down

I am officially terrified to sleep at night...my 3 1/2 month old started rolling over to his belly a couple days ago and has decided he prefers his tummy to sleep FACE DOWN in the mattress. I feel like he is rolling over a little early for his age which is part of the reason I am so worried, because he has pretty good head control, but not as good as a 5 or 6 month old would when they start rolling over. I only have a fitted sheet in the crib, but even the waterproof pad is freaking me out with the little extra padding. I don't know if a breathing monitor is an option because he moves all around his crib! Anyone have advice and experience that will help me sleep better at night? Thanks so much!!

  • I don't know if 3.5 months is that early. DD has been doing this since 10 weeks. My pedi said if they can roll they can dictate how they sleep. I don't swaddle anymore and have nothing in the crib.

I know a lot of moms in here and that angel care monitor. Perhaps try that if you are worried?

FWIW, I lay DD on back when I out her down and she usually stays on her back.

  • DS1 did that. It freaked me out for a few nights and then I realized he was fine.

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • DS sleeps with his face buried into my shoulder, chest or back when sleeping. He moves when he can't breathe. I don't know how he does like that, but he gets mad when I try to move him. He doesn't like when I wear a sweater as that messes up his special spot.

Ill probably worry when it happens but I have the angel care, plus a video monitor.

Yes! My kid does this too. I keep trying to move him but he puts his head right back in the same spot. Then I end up waking him up from fighting with him to do what I want. I'm just so scared he's not going to be able to breathe. When he's in the carrier he face plants right into my breasts and passes out. He enjoys those and my armpits.
  • Thanks! Just went out to buy the angelcare monitor so hopefully I can get a little sleep!

  • My LO started rolling in his crib a few days ago. I stopped swaddling and just have the crib sheet. I kept going in to check on him because he rolled his face out of monitor view. But he managed to turn his head to the side. He also laid on top of one of his arms and I was going to go in and pull it out, but noticed he took it out himself. Babies are pretty smart at figuring out positions that are comfortable to them, and if they aren't they will move themselves to get comfy.

This. Except Snuza instead of Angelcare. I'm looking forward to LO being able to do this because I think we'll all get more restful sleep. The startle reflex and swaddles are PITAs.
