First Years Breastflow Bottle

Anyone use this?  I'm thinking of trying it out.  LO gets bottles at daycare and nurses at home.  We are currently using the Lansinoh mOmma bottles which he takes fine but it literally only takes him 5 minutes to drink his 4 oz bottle.  I'm thinking because he gets the milk so fast from his current bottle, he fights me while on the breast because it isn't coming out fast enough to suit him.  Plus, he gets upset when he finishes his bottle.  I'm getting very frustrated with this constant battle and am seriously considering giving up BF if I can't get this figured out.

Re: First Years Breastflow Bottle

  • What flow nipple are you using? I can't imagine any 3mo old taking 4oz in 5min! I would put a slow flow nipple in... That's going to best mirror the breast.

  • I'm using the original nipple that came with the bottles which is a slow flow.  He's got a very strong suck and always thinks he's starving.  He's had plenty of wet and dirty diapers and is gaining weight so I don't think I need to up the amount of milk.

  • Hang in there, it could be a growth spurt.  LO may act super starved for a few days, and then magically they go back to the old normal and act like nothing happened.  If the bottles are working I wouldn't change them around.  There is a good info sheet on kellymom that describes how to bottle feed a breastfed baby.  You can print it and give it to the workers at daycare, they need to slow him down.

Keep up the breastfeeding at home.  Sometimes at this age they are much more aware of their surroundings, and want to see what is going on.  Try nursing in a low stimulation environment, no tv on etc and see if that makes a difference.

  • My guy did something similar last week. He was crying and due to eat so DH gave him a bottle. He just screamed with it in his mouth then latch for a second and cry again. Turns out he just wanted his binky and wasn't crying. BFing also calmed him but he was just comfort sucking. Maybe he just wants comfort and isn't hungry yet
  • I had this same problem. DS would take the bottle and get very fussy with the breast. I've changed from using the Medela bottles to the playtex drop ins and I use the naturalatch slow nipple. It's actually made a difference in BFing him. He doesn't fight me anymore and is actually seeking out the breast more. He used to hate it. I was ready to give up until I changed bottles.
  • I used the Breastflow bottles when DD1 was in daycare. Loved them. We never had any issues with her refusing the breast.

  • Total lurker here but we use the Breastflow bottles and LOVE them! They were recommended by my lactation consultant and they ended up being the only bottles that DD won't choke on - all the other "slow flow" nipples on other bottles that we tried were still too fast for her (I have a slow let down). I haven't had any problems with her refusing the breast and she switches back and forth easily - could just be her nature, but that's our experience!
  • Just thought I would update.  I increased his bottles to 4.5 ounces which has seemed to help during the day and also, pretty sure I was misreading his cues in the evening.  He's tired and was using me more for comfort sucking like @haylo33 suggested. Last night, he was attached to my boob for nearly an hour with milk running down his cheek and asleep. He'd fall off, wake up, reattach and wouldn't take a paci.  I'll take that over the crying fits.

    Thanks for the advice, Ladies!!
