SPD & Delivery Issues or Permanent Damage

Hi ladies - I don't post often (yup, I lurk b/c I'm almost always bumping from my phone and suck at typing on it!), but did a search and couldn't find if this was asked already - please forgive me if it has!

This is my second pregnancy (DD is 18 months), and I'm 34 weeks.  I have some pretty severe pain in my hips/pelvic area that has developed in the last couple of months.  It is terribly painful to do some things- like get into a side-lying position in bed every night.  I've expressed to my OB how painful it is, and she says it's normal, don't worry about it - only have 6 weeks or so to go, and it will go away when baby is born, and to stop worrying about permanent damage or problems with delivery, etc (stupid Dr. Google...)

I'm totally not one to get advice from my doctor and then run to ask a bunch of internet strangers if they agree with the advice I got.  But I guess I'm wondering if what she told me is a typical response.  For any of you ladies with this (what sounds like to me SPD), what has your OB told you?  Same thing, or something different?  I just feel like I've pressed my OB pretty hard on it, but I still can't shake the feeling that this is not normal, and I really have no point of reference on this.

Thanks ladies!

Re: SPD & Delivery Issues or Permanent Damage

  • I have SPD, it is unbearable pain. I literally can't hardly lift my left side.
I am allowed pain killers or narcotics if I ask. I am allowed to take ibuprofen for inflammation. I was put on bedrest 2x last baby. I'm on modified now at 32 weeks. You can feel the separation on my pelvic bone in the front.

Spd is a pain that far surpasses regular pregnancy pain. It brings me to tears when I walk. I don't roll over in bed and it takes me at least 15 minutes just to put on my underwear.

I have been told it can cause damage after birth but it is rare. It does usually take a few weeks for the pain to feel better.

  • I was pretty much told the same thing you were. It think permanent damage or labor difficulty from it is rare and that's why they don't really discuss it much.

My doctor told me the same thing & the pain did go away after birth.

  • Justabean3 - I agree, this surpasses normal.  Maybe I just have a super low pain tolerance.  It's getting worse, and I'm dreading it starting to affect (more than it does now) walking.   My "bedrest" is going to work b/c I have a desk job.  It's so much harder to be at home now with an 18 month old and stairs!  Did you have to do anything differently during labor and delivery as a result?

I have verified shallow pelvis from X-ray. They said I could try a vaginal with my first but it probably wouldn't go well. I did. My 7 pound 2oz baby got stuck and I got an emergency c-section with a cord wrapped a few times. This pain was nothing compared to SPD. I have c-sections now

When I say not normal and above normal pain. It is like walking on a broken leg, I guess that is what I would equate it too. I really can't explain the feeling to justify it's painfulness. My left hip also pops and snaps when I take a step from the ligament pulling across my hip. It has gotten progressively worse each pregnancy.

I don't do stairs :) The 3 at work I go to the grass.

If you are having a bad day you can ask about ibprophen on occasion. I think you have to be diagnosed for them to usually allow it though. I am allowed 800mg on occasion and pain meds/ IV (which I have to stay at l&d), Tylenol 3 or hydrocodine but I have to call the line and they call in how many I need based on pain level..

I know this all sounds dramatic but it is all the way this has gone this go round
  • I try to just get by with regular ole Tylenol and don't walk much.
  • Justabean- Oh my! I can't decide if this makes me feel better b/c it could be so much worse or terrible b/c you've got it so much worse! I'm so sorry you have so much pain!

Other ladies who replied - thank you for your input. Glad to know what I was told is normal. I'll keep hobbling along chanting "x more days... X more days..." :)
  • I got myself into this mess :) I knew before I got pregnant it would be this way. I do think you develop a daily living and learn to avoid what you can when you can plus my OB has been really great with allowing me to call or go to L&D when/if I have to.
  • My OB was pretty much like, meh, I'm an OB.  Do you want to see a physical therapist?  I said, okay, and they sent me to a pregnancy-specialist physical therapist.  There was a ton of info from the therapist on how to sit, move, etc. plus we did exercises that helped and water therapy, which was generally pleasant.  Unfortunately, I no longer have a baby-sitter that can come at appt times.  So I do not do therapy any more, but simply lying down while the baby-sitter chases my child for a few hours/day really, really helps.  The physical therapist said not to stop walking, etc. as doctor google sources sometimes suggest.  Mostly, keep your legs together and don't push big heavy things.
  • My pelvic pain just started this weekend and had been getting progressively worse, walking, standing up from the seated position and rolling over have brought me to tears. My doula recommended seeing a chiropractor, which I see monthly anyway, but I saw him yesterday and had pain relief for about an hour. I am going to see him again tonight and then we can determine how his adjustments are holding and decide on the frequency of visits from there. He also said after this second appointment to start wearing a pelvic support belt to help keep my hips from shifting any further. My doula has been reassuring me that it shouldn't affect my delivery or have any long term side effects or damage, maybe I have a milder case than others who have posted though.
A tip that has been really helpful has been to keep my knees together when rolling over, such a small thing but has made such a difference at night, also when getting out of my car to swivel with my knees together and try to step out on both feet.

  • You're 34 Weeks and this is just starting for you. I don't think it's SPD. Yes SPD can happen at any point in time during pregnancy but typically presents itself very early on as the relaxin starts taking effect and your hips start really spreading. I have SPD and it started with me around 20ish weeks. no bueno. no bueno at all. i can't stand for more than 5-10 minutes at a time because it's so incredibly painful. My hip brace doesn't help any more, my doctor has me on pretty strong meds to help with the pain (mind you i only take them once a week so that way i can sleep), and more often than not when i'm laying in bed and trying to roll from side to side or move my legs to off the bed, my pelvis clicks. it literally makes a clicking sound close to the sound of cracking a knuckle and it HURTS. Hurts to the point that i either cry or vomit.

With that being said, They have hip and belly braces at various stores. Target, walmart, motherhood... ect... i would suggest investing in one of those and staying off your feet. baby is just getting bigger and you have anywhere between 2&6 weeks before baby gets here. that pressure and soreness is to be somewhat expected at this point but it will increase.
