Help! In a lot of pain!

I'm EBF my 6 day old son. I EBF my daughter until she was one with no issues. This time around I am in so much pain. I think the first time or two he latched on I don't think the latch was that good but since then it's been great. I had son small blood blisters on the tips of my nipples but no cracking or bleeding. The blisters have since healed too. I am still in so much pain though. My nipples are so sensitive they hurt constantly. Even my shirt grazing them hurts. When he first latches on the pain is so bad I want to scream. The left breast seems to lighten up throughout the feeding but the left breast is pretty much just as painful the whole time. Anyone have any ideas on what might be going on or how to fix it?

Re: Help! In a lot of pain!

  • With my LO a few bad latches really hurt my nipple in the beginning. I tried cream and air drying, bm and shirtless but was still brought to tears each time. Hydro gel pads REALLY helped and I even pumped and gave a bottle for two days and then went back to nursing. I know pumping that early isn't "good" but that's what seemed to really help them heal and not quit. I just got lucky that he didn't get nipple confusion or prefer the bottle. It was during his first or second week.

    Good luck!!

Hi!! I would switch position for me the football hold gave me much less pain the first days of BF and Silverette silver cups worn religiously 24/7 were a game changer!
  • I was experiencing this as well.. constant pain, no time to heal, shooting pains, etc. Turns out we both had thrush and also I had mastitis. Im still recovering, but the nipple shield saved me and I was able to feed thru the pain. I was ready to quit at 1 week due to the bleeding and pain. Every time I would go to feed DD I nearly passed out from the pain and was crying thru the night. So wrong. But now… on the upswing after treatment with meds, shields, cream, and air drying the nips. Improvement day by day.
  • Thanks for the suggestions. They've gotten a little better but it's still pretty painful. I have a lc coming tomorrow to help me out. I'm not giving up!
  • Air time, lanolin cream religiously, and do not allow bad latch. Re-latch every time even if it hurts initially. When the pain goes away after a few seconds, you know the latch is right. If it doesn't, I assume the latch is off somehow. Try a different position. But lanolin and air time saved my nipps.
