I'm thinking about driving to the beach to visit a friend over Labor Day, roughly a 7 hour drive plus stops, just me and DS, who will be 17 months. Any suggestions on keeping him occupied and happy in the car for a drive that long?
We just drove to the beach and back a few weeks ago but I had DH. DD is 3.5 and DS is 23 mos. We left at 430 in the morning and the kids did not go back to sleep in the car and were pretty fussy. If your LO sleeps well in the car that might be better for you.
As far as toys we took magna doodles and the kids like drawing with that. We also had toy microphones because they loved to sing along with plenty of kid music. We also took a portable DVD player and a few movies/shows. When we stopped we stopped for awhile and burned energy (we hit Chick Fil A there and back). We were probably 11.5 hours each way with 3 stops both times. Good luck!
We are outta luck on the tablet idea because we don't have one, so it's pretty much down to toys and music. I love the magna doodle idea...and of course leaving early enough that he can sleep through a portion of the drive. We're only going to be there for 4 days though, so I don't want to spend the entire first day feeling like a zombie. Sadly, he likes books but only when I read them to him and do the goofy voices, so maybe I can find a few of his faves on CD and sing along for him.
