Daniel Tiger?

I hear so much about this show and I have never seen it on our channel lists.

DD likes Princess Sophia and Bubble Guppies but those two are the only shows that I have tried that I found that are acceptable for having on when we are winding down in the evening while I make dinner or first thing in the morning while I caffeinate.  I am not anti-TV but am fairly picky about kid shows.

I have looked at a few others but mostly was unimpressed (Doc McStuffins - ok, my 3rd favorite, Paw Patrol - meh, My Little Ponies - creepy animation, Dora - too obnoxious, makes me feel like I am going to develop ADD, etc. )

How am I missing Daniel Tiger?  Is it a web thing?  I am technologically delayed so somebody school me on this show.  Or have you found any others that are decent?  I can't stand the crazy animation or hyperhyper and I like when they kind of have a plot/theme.

  • What about good ol' Sesame Street? ;) We DVR a few of those and have them on hand for emergency TV in moments of desperation.

  • Taylor LOVES sesame street! Elmo, Elmo, Elmo! And now Cookie! haha. Daniel Tiger is on your PBS or PBS kids station. I think it's also on Netflix. It's a spin-off of Mr. Rogers in animated form - so, so cute!

  • DS LOVES Daniel Tiger and says "Dan Dan" when it comes on. It is on PBS but they also have episodes available online. I'm also particular about the shows DS watches and stick mainly to PBS (Sesame, Daniel tiger, and sometimes Curious George).

  • DS is on the Elmo bandwagon as well.  I love Sesame Street because I can always find an episode about something he's really interested in (all the seasons are on Netflix and Amazon Prime, or you can YouTube them if you have time).  Right now it's dinosaurs, farms, heavy equipment (tractors and dump trucks), and the zoo, so I search for those episodes, and load them onto my playlists.  I also keep the 5 most recently aired on our DVR, but it usually takes us 4-5 days to get through a whole episode.  Like you, he watches 5-10 minutes after his bath at night, and maybe 20 minutes on Sat. and Sun. mornings while DH and I are still waking up.  I'm not anti-TV, but we really don't watch much TV in general, so it's not really something we ever have on.  The talk radio and podcasts on the other hand are on all the time.  I'm pretty sure my son knows the theme song to "Wait, wait, don't tell me..." on NPR, so yeah, I've pretty much sealed his news loving, dork fate!

My niece really likes Daniel Tiger.  She's 3, and I guess there this hug thing that he does on the show where he pretends to hug the kids through the TV while saying something, and my niece loves to hug her little sister (she's 1) and say the thing Daniel Tiger says.  It's really cute!  My sister is a fan of it.  She feels it does a good job of addressing issues at kid level, such as sharing, being different, and having and being a good friend.  My niece also likes Bo on the Go which I watched with her for the first time last weekend, and that one was really cute.  It encourages exercise while watching it which is slightly disappointing that we have to encourage children to exercise through television programming, but that's a whole other can of worms!

I was reading a really interesting article in the Dr's office last week about our kid-centric lives and how much it's changed over the last 30 years.  We now have entire TV channels devoted to kids programming, kids menus at restaurants, and playing kids music and DVDs in our cars.  The article went on to say they believe a lot of it stems from having both parents working outside the home, so once mom and dad finally get to spend time with their kids, they want to make sure it's something special.  It also cited that, even though we may feel we're busier than we used to be, we're actually spend several more hours a day with our children than our parents did in the '80s when it was at an all time low along with a lack of kid-centric stuff.  DS has his well child check tomorrow, I'll try and find the source.  It was really interesting, but it made me feel better about keeping my NPR on in the car, and having DS share off my plate when we go out to eat instead of getting him chicken strips or mac-n-cheese (we follow a Paleo lifestyle, so there's usually never anything I'd feed DS on the kids menu anyway).

  • DD LOVES Daniel Tiger. That and Sesame Street are the only things she will watch more than 10 minutes of. She actually watched a full episode the other day about Daniel using the potty. I am excited because this week Daniel is having a baby, and so is DD.

  • @bennikki - I totally understand about kid-centric stuff and I actually heard something about how we spend more time than they did in the eighties, etc (I also listen to NPR so probably heard the same program).

I listen to my own music in the car and DD knows the word "news" because I watch the news in the morning.   I think some of the kid stuff is great but I like a little balance.  I think that is why I am picky about shows... some of it is so mindless and awful that i can't stand to even have the crud on. :)

  • We canceled our DirecTV when we moved into our new house and just have Netflix. Which we highly recommend! Pretty much any show we want to watch that is on cable/dish we can view online.

J loves Daniel Tiger, I don't mind it, my H hates it! But I think all the lessons/messages are positive. The little tunes they sing are catchy. I've actually caught myself singing to J a few of the songs when the moment arises...DH gives me a death stare!

He also loves on Netflix Peg+Cat, Curious George and unfortunately for me, Bob the Builder. We still let him watch Bubble Guppies on my iPad sometimes.

J usually gets to watch a show in the AM as we get ready and again after we get home from work/daycare. But honestly he probably actually only sits there and seriously watches it for about 5 maybe 10 minutes sometimes less and then he's up and into something in the kitchen or his room or at our feet.

    Henry Cavill...You're welcome!

  • DS loves Daniel Tiger!  He really only likes 4 shows; Daniel Tiger, Thomas and Friends, Caillou and Curious George.  He really only watches TV in the am while I am either too tired to get out of bed (he often wakes up at 5:30am or while I am showering/dressing.  I did actually just DVR today's Daniel Tiger though, as it is the one where they have a new baby.  I am not sure how good the episode is, but I was hoping that it would help DS understand that he will be a big brother (as of right now, he has no clue what that means).

My lo loves it because he is only interested in the intro songs for shows and he can just continually watch the intro.

Another thing in addition to the great shows you guys listed above is the Sesame Street channel on YouTube--it's a good mix of new and old Sesame Street skits, and each one is about 5 minutes long. So many great classic skits that I remember from my childhood, plus some new ones, and short enough that he's not watching for too long.

  • Our whole family loves Daniel Tiger (DS, me, DH, MIL).  It is such a sweet show and is all about growing up and emotional development.  Some might find the songs annoying but they are intended to be reminders to help children develop self-regulation ("When you feel so mad that you want to roar ... take a deep breath and count to four") and I think they're helpful for parents, too, to remind us that we have to explain to children HOW to do things instead of always telling them NOT to do something!

Since DS doesn't nap for crap, the show gives us some time to calm down and the best part is that DS loves to sit and cuddle with me during the entire show and now gives "uggamuggas", where we rub noses (that's the special hug PP was referring to).

and I cried during the new baby special... so freakin' sweet.
