DD "popping" herself on and off

Just wondering if any other mammas are experiencing this. DD is 6 months, sometimes while nursing and doing some acrobatics while still latched she starts "popping" herself on and off. After a few pop off I usually switch breast or end the session if she has already nursed both sides. Anyone have experience with this or know what could be the cause of this. This is not happening all the time but seems to be happening more and more.

Re: DD "popping" herself on and off

  • My guy is only 3 mos and was doing this. A friend suggested firmly telling him no and putting him down for a minute before resuming the session.... That didn't work for us. Me not reacting worked best and now he is on to other things like grabbing hair/clothes---- but no longer popping, I'll take it.

  • My LO does this. She doesn't look at me when she does this so I'm not sure she's trying to get a reaction from me. It doesn't hurt but it doesn't feel awesome either so I tell her to stop and if she doesn't it a bunch, I hang back for a minute to see if she's just not hungry and playing or if she really wants to eat. She usually takes 20 minutes on each side (and hasn't gotten much faster at all!) so if she's doing it and we've reached 20 minutes, I burp and switch her to the other side. All of the popping on and off, she definitely needs a burp.

  • Mine does this as well and we are about to hit 5 months. I now feed him in a quiet room when I'm home. I think he is just curious about what is going on around him. It will pass if not they need to eat with less distractions.

  • Normal....could be a lot of things, but most likely age related. Noticing a lot more in the environment. I do remember after a certain point we went down to mostly night, middle of the night, and nap feedings because he was just too distracted. But that happened closer to 9 months I think. I just struggled through with the popping on and off between 6 and 9. Try nursing in a familiar location with lights off or just a darkened room with no distractions.
