No diaper bags at DC?

DS moved in the toddler room in June. Today I was told diaper bags aren't allowed in this room. The teacher mentioned something about making room for other kids. I thought the room was full, or almost full, and there's plenty of room for his bag. I'm supposed to unpack his bag in the mornings and take it with me. Is this normal?

Re: No diaper bags at DC?

  • @catbenatar I use cloth diapers so I take those in daily. I also send him soy milk (since he's allergic dairy milk) and snacks. He has a cubby but it's only big enough for the nap mat.

  • The only thing that I bring each day is her lunch bag.  Everything else stays at the daycare in her cubby or other storage area (like diaper cupboard).
  • We bring a bag and leave it. DS has a cubby and thats where his sheet/lovey go and they wash those every night. Below his cubby is a hook for his coat and thats where I also hang my bag (its a smallish bag and there is plenty of room). I bring pacifiers to and from every day because I like to wash them myself at home, as well as his sippy cup. I also bring his extra clothes to and from every day. He rarely needs to change in to them and its the best way for me to make sure we always have something size and weather appropriate in there because quite frankly I dont always do drop offs and pick ups so I would forget to tell my husband/parents to check.  I also send in a lunch bag with 3 snacks, though DS is moving to the toddler room at the end of the month and I think after that I wont be allowed to send food anymore, I have to check. I prefer to send his snacks because I dont love their options.  Our diapers/wipes/desitin stay at DC in the changing station.

All that being said, I think there is only one other person I have seen with a bag in there. I am probably in the minority. Most people leave all their stuff at DC.

  • Clothing changes stay in a plastic shoe box in the cubby, diapers (wipes, etc) are at the diaper station. Check with your child's teacher where they want you to put the additional food (do they put that in the kitchen?)
  • We bring a backpack/tote that we hang and leave in his cubby. At the end of the day, they put his empty lunch box, crafts and activity reports in there so we just grab the bag and go.

  • Can you send a carton of soy milk with his name of it for them to keep? Then you should only need a small bag for Diapers and snacks.

Like others have said we only send a lunch box every day. On fridays we get a bag with her sippy and crafts.

We have been at two daycares and while we weren't told we could not bring a diaper bag, no one did.  We brought (at both daycares) a bottle bag filled with bottles for our DS when he was a baby and DD now.  They also each have a cubby (DS had one at his old daycare as well) where we leave extra clothes, etc.  DC provides food and diapers so we never had to bring those.  Whatever you are bringing, I would bring maybe a small toddler sized backpack or even just a plastic grocery bag and stick in his cubby or just give to them if there's no room in the cubby.  I'm sure they don't expect you to carry in 5 or 6 cloth diapers and milk in your bare hands.

  • We have a hood below the cubby and that's where I hang the empty backpack after taking out the lunchbox and placing it with other lunchboxes. I usually don't bring anything else in since the diapers/wipes/cream/extra clothing lives in daycare. For cloth diapers where are you supposed to put them in the morning? Can you bring them in a thin collapsable tote which folds down to pocket size so you can stick in in his cubby? I bought something like that from Ikea but this is similar to what I mean:

  • We've never left bags at daycare. I put extra clothes and anything else they might need in their cubbies. And we'd bring in a package of diapers and wipes that they stored for us.

  • We leave his diaper bag at DC just so whoever picks him up has it.  We could probably just leave it at home, but I do keep an extra outfit, diapers and wipes in there in case they ever run out.
  • Thanks for the suggestions. I was thinking I could get a small backpack or lunchbox for his milk and food. I'll ask them about leaving a carton of milk for him. That's a great idea I hadn't considered. The diapers I can take in in the wet bag.

This morning I counted the cubbies - there are 12 in his room. I don't know the ratios but they can't have that many in his room so I'm not sure what the deal is.

  • Why don't you just use some sort of Nylon tote that collapses to a very small size? I think of my diaper bags and how bulky they were - even when empty - and I am so glad to be rid of them!

I'm thinking one of those bags that folds in to it's own little attached pouch.

  • In the preschool I work in, we have a policy against backpacks/tote bags. This is because of what children could put in them - medications, weapons, toys, small objects, etc. Or what parents may forget to take out - what was previously listed and the silica packets.  Our cubbies are located in the classroom, and if children got to those objects it would not be good. Cubbies are in the open and the classroom is highly monitored, however, things can happen very quickly.  We do have canvas storage totes for each child where their extra clothes go. We have a policy against food and drinks from the outside - we eat family style and we provide the meals (if there is a medical condition/allergy we provide those substitutions).
At my son's daycare (he isn't old enough to come to my program yet), I bring a backpack.  The diapers go in a bin at the changing table. I restock his backpack every few days. I also bring his milk and water because I do not like the milk they provide and I like to monitor how much fluids he takes in daily.  But those go directly in to the fridge.  He has a few lovies that go back and forth with us daily. I keep his extra clothes in the backpack so that I can monitor the sizes and any needs for weather changes, etc, otherwise I may not, because it is rare that he soils his clothes.
So yeah, leaving a carton of milk, a sleeve of diapers, and some clothes would be ideal. My one recommendation to you though, is to check regularly yourself as to how much milk and diapers are left, they may forget to tell you, until its too late.

  • Each child has a cubby for their extra clothes, hats etc....then they have a plastic box for their diapers and wipes. DC lets me know when they need a refill on my daughters diapers/wipes.

I have not seen any bags in my daughters DC room and she is with the toddlers.

When she was an infant, we would bring pre-made bottles and they would store them in the fridge in the room.
