Transition from crib to big bed

Hi all - I haven't been on the boards in a long time but my girls will be 3 next month and we decided to move them to twin sized beds.  They are great sleepers and like their cribs.  I expected they would have climbed out of them by now but they don't.  We thought it would be an easy move.  We took their cribs down Fri night - the girls didn't go to bed until 10 p.m.  They didn't nap Sat and were up late and a couple of times during the night.  No nap today and have just gone to bed at 9 p.m.  They are going to be a mess tomorrow.  Any advice to keep them in their beds?

Re: Transition from crib to big bed

  • My b/g twins shared a room and we transitioned them to toddler beds at three.  We tried rewards charts with stickers when they stayed in bed.  I don't mind some talking before sleep, but they were supposed to stay in bed.  Many, many nights I had to go up and remind them to quiet down or get in bed.  They got a warning first.  If I continued to have to go up, I removed a stuffed animal from their bed.  It did improve and some nights they were crazier than others.  We also used black out shades to keep their room darker and cooler.

  • We transitioned my g/g twins to toddler beds when they were 2.5.  They share a room and the first few nights were rough--they had "sleepovers" in each other's bed (which meant no sleep haha) and naptime was non-existent.  So I started splitting them up for naptime.  One sleeps in their room and I put the other one in a pack-in-play in our office (and when my DH works from home I put the pack-in-play in the master bedroom).  It's not ideal but it works for us.  At night we use incentives for them to stay in bed. For example, my Dad was in Orlando for business and picked up princess panties for the girls.  If they stayed in bed they could wear their princess panties the next day (which was a big deal! haha).  Other times it has been a trip to the park, a special show on tv, etc.  Right now it's the ability to pick out their outfit the next day.  They are very independent and love to pick out their own clothes, so they can only do so if they stay in bed the night before (otherwise Mommy picks out their clothes).  Most nights this works, but there are other nights that my DH and I have to remind them to stay in bed over and over.  Now, they mostly talk to each other but will stay in their own bed (like I said--they want to pick out their own outfit!) but I'm ok with that.  They'll talk for about 30 min before falling asleep.
