Cloth Diapering

Dumb ? about insert

Just checking - I recently got the Thirsties stay dry duo inserts. I can use just these inserts (nothing else) inside of a Thirsties duo wrap? Or I can use them to line a cloth diaper and cover that whole thing with a cover and call it an all-in-two diaper? Sorry, I just wanted to make sure I understand what the heck I'm doing so I can be using everything properly! :)

Anyone find that the inserts work well on their own (with a cover) for a newborn?

Re: Dumb ? about insert

  • sorry- I read that option 1 is to use just the insert in a cover but option two would be to use a pre-fold or fitted diaper, line that with this insert and then cover the whole thing. Seems like it'd be really bulky though.

  • Did you watch cloth diapering 101 on youtube?

A lot of inserts are microfiber and therefore cannot be used against baby's skin, they must be inside a pocket.  I don't know those inserts specifically, so I'm not saying they are.  But I wanted to make sure you knew about MF.

  • Ok thanks guys. I did watch the you tube series but it was about a month ago. I should probably do so again. Thanks!

  • Oh, and they have snaps.  So these are similar to best bottoms, they are AI2s.

Then yes, these can go in a Thirsties cover, done and done.  AI2s are awesome.  However, I will give you a heads up that they aren't the best for newborns, only bc newborn poo is very liquidy and gets everywhere.  So you most likely won't be able to reuse the covers.  Which is sort of the point of a cover.  But if you have enough, it's NBD.  I use best bottoms on my 12 week old (and have for about 6 weeks now.)  I have enough covers that I don't care if I have to change the whole diaper, inserts + cover, each change.  But something to be aware of.
Usually with prefolds or fitteds and a cover you can reuse the cover several times.  If you want.

  • @TJ1979, Just re watched the CD 101 series and she actually recommends buying micro fleece to go against baby's skin if baby needs wicking properties due to rashing, etc. Have you found that this doesn't work or hurts baby?
