Pregnant after 35

1st visit with new OB - update to earlier rant

I saw the new OB today. As expected, this office also had pros and cons. The 2 biggest cons: one, they were running very behind. But he had a delivery that morning. After one visit, I can't make a decision about whether or not this is the norm or an exception. Second, the crowded waiting room (because they were running behind) had an overwhelming smell of cigarettes, BO, and screaming children. I halfway expected this because of the office location and the neighborhood it is in. Normally it wouldn't bother me, but I failed to consider my over-sensitive sense of smell when pregnant, or how many more screaming children would be there due to the office behing behind. They also have another office location which I might try at least once to see if it is different. It is at the hospital where I'll deliver and is only a 5-10 minute longer drive.

Pros: The staff was fantastic and explained everything. I feel like nothing will get lost here. Phone calls will be returned, prescriptions will be filled, labs will be ordered correctly, ultrasounds won't be forgotten, etc. And the staff was so much BIGGER than my other doctor's office.

Neutral: Doctor's bedside manner - eh. He was rushed. But I also work in healthcare and realize that bedside manner can change by the day and by the hour depending on all kinds of things. I will probably see both him and the other doc in his practice so that there's a good chance I know the person delivering the baby.

I'll go ahead and cancel my appointment with the old doctor for next week.

Re: 1st visit with new OB - update to earlier rant

  • Hey @mattandlora :)  Seems like you're more comfortable overall with this doctor, huh?  I hope you like the other location better.

I love my doc and her staff, but I have similar problems to your new OB.  The waiting room is normally a total zoo with unruly children, a loud TV, and crowded with grumpy people.  I've found a strategy that works most times.  The people with kids seem to not use the dedicated kids' room.  So I just sit there and turn down the TV.

My OB is often late.  She's been late more often than not, but there is normally some explanation (emergency, or procedure that went on too long).  Her office's location is also a pain - I have to pay to park, there's traffic etc.

But I like her and her staff is very helpful, so I'm sticking with her.

  • Sounds like your visit went like mine did with my new OB. Of course ours was pushed around bc they wanted an U/S and not bc he was late. But in the end, I saw him just long enough for him to do a quick pap and then out the door he went. So I am not entirely sure I *love* this OB or not. I go Wed so we shall see then.

  • I agree that it sounds like you are more comfortable with your new doc and his staff than your old.  I always try to schedule early in the day bc the office doesn't seem as chaotic and they are less likely to be behind.  Additionally, most appointments will be quick- I'm typically in and out in 30 min or less unless I need something done at the lab (and that only adds like 10 min).  I'd also ask what they do when your doc is in the hospital for a delivery- do they have a back up doc or MW for you to see?
