Rolling Over

Hi Ladies!

My little one is going to be 6 months on Thursday and she has only rolled over once (from back to front, the hard way lol).  Well it was one full day of a ton of rolling and then she just hasn't done it again.

We do tummy time a few times a day and she has tons of exercise mat play.  She is a little small for her age (9% percentile but she has a petite frame according to the pediatrician), but was only born one week early.  She is only really interested in sitting up and standing.  She always has.  She loves her exersaucer and bouncing in that.

Have any of your little's not rolled yet?  A friend of mine's daughter was born the same day as mine and has been rolling since 4 months :(

PS:  This is my second (my girls are 16 months apart) and I feel like my first rolled at 5 months :/

Re: Rolling Over

  • every baby is different. some babies roll early, others take longer. if your pediatrician isn't concerned then you don't have to be either. if it makes you feel any better, my pedi said motor skills are not a sign of intelligence.

  • You could talk to your pedi about it. I can see why you'd be concerned. But I think some babies prefer to stand and be up rather than on the ground. My LO rolled over at 4 months and did it like crazy for a few days, and didn't do it again until she was almost 6 months. My pedi said sometimes once babies have mastered something, they don't really feel the need to do it again for a while whereas others won't stop. My guess is it's JBBB.
  • Well, hi.

Every baby is different. Your LO might be working on other things and will get around to rolling. If your really concerned, your pedi is your best bet. He knows your LO better than us.

  • Dr. BlueDot says... 1. All babies are different. 2. Google works too. 3. Call your doctor if you're concerned 4. Who are you?
I'm sorry BlueDot818, I didn't realize this was a closed club where Moms who are worried aren't allowed to ask other Moms with babies who are the same age questions.

My name is Erin.  I am a Mom of two daughters.  I had terrible PPD with my first and one of the things that seemed to help was to not read forums because I was constantly comparing my baby and situation to everyone else.

Thank you for your advice ladies.  When we went for her 4 month check, the PA said if she doesn't roll by 6 months, then we need to be concerned (but that was the PA and not her actual Doctor).  Her check up is next week and I'm just worried.  I work with her a lot but she just has no interest in it.  I guess I'll just keep working with her and try to not get so worked up.

  • F14 doesn't take too well to the baby comparison topic...but here's my view on your question.

I'm with the others saying some babies are busy working on something else and aren't worried about rolling. My DD is like this. She hasn't rolled at all, either way. She just doesn't want to. I honestly think she could because she's so close both on her belly and on her back. She is sitting up though, very well actually.

  • Ok, I apologize for offending all of you.  Thank you to those who were helpful.  I realize this is a club, but guess I just thought other Mothers would be a little compassionate and understand being concerned and scared.  Sorry to bother you all.

  • Nine times out of ten with something like this the doctor says "let's give it awhile longer" and then the baby starts to do it. It's always good to ask your pediatrician for peace of mind though. That is what well baby visits are for.

  • Thank you ladies.  I swear I'm not a jerk and I was scared and wasn't thinking about the fact that you ladies have been together from the beginning and I am just some person randomly posting on here.

Yes, I could have googled, but I used to work in the medical field and a lot of the information is contradicting and a lot of times false.

I just want the best for my children and wanted to ask other Moms with children near the same age what their experiences are.  I was beginning to think she was the only baby who has no interest in rolling.  I guess I'm just a worried Mom who thought maybe she was developmentally set back, but you ladies have helped me bring things into perspective.  I do appreciate your help greatly and understand that maybe randomly posting here wasn't my best move.  Thank you all again.

  • My LO didn't roll over at all until a week before she was 6 months old. I was starting to get a little concerned until she did it one day and now all she wants to do is roll over! Try not to worry, it'll come soon enough :)

  • FWIW, my LO (5.5 months) started rolling from tummy to back about a month ago. For about 2 weeks every time you put her on her belly she'd smile and immediately roll over. Now, not so much. She's probably only done it once or twice in the past 2 weeks. I think she's just proven that she can do it, but is now moving on. She's gotten to be a pretty good sitter in the meantime, so I think that's just where her interests are. She still hasn't rolled back to front, but I think she could. She just hates being on her tummy, so why would she?

She's been the same with other things as well. She'll make a certain sound for a week or two and then we don't hear it again and she makes a new one. I get the impression some babies are just like that.

I'd definitely bring it up at the appt next week, but I wouldn't be too worried in the meantime.

  • I can not even believe I'm responding to this thread but i feel compelled to side w Erin here .. how old are you gals? is this middle school? maybe some people don't have enough time to be developing lengthy "relationships" w each other on the bump. and maybe some moms pop on here occasionally to see if others are facing similar issues -- the sarcasm may seem funny in real life but it doesn't transfer well to the digital world-- so.. lighten up.. and a simple "u seem new here what's your story?" would have been a kinder approach to this concerned mom . think it's time to delete this app.

But....no one was unkind, at least IMO. OP actually got good advice -- don't stress, there's a huge range of normal, call your pedi, google, etc. It's not out of line to ask for a little bit of an intro, especially when the poster has 0 comments or discussions -- especially because we've had some AE drama here recently.

Maybe take your own "lighten up" advice? Or delete. Whatever.

  • I will always read GBCB as "Go Be a Cry Baby"

For reals though, she got an answer, with follow up questions as to who she is. That's not mean.

What does it mean anyways? I'm not going to go do a quick Google search because apparently I can just use F14 for that. @-)
  • Good bye cruel bump!

Everything makes so much more sense now. 8-X

    Thanks. :)
