Sleep issues: you, not your baby

Anyone else still dealing with sleep issues? LO is sleeping great so I could be getting the best sleep since he was born but I cannot fall asleep! I've tried Tylenol, and tht works to help me relax and fall asleep first thing, but I was up at 4:40 this am with LO and obv the Tylenol had worn off and I've been awake since. He fell back asleep, but I did not. My skin just CRAWLS! I've tried warmer shower, cooler showers, lotion right after - nothing helps my skin either. I had an insane rash from 2 weeks pp to 4 weeks pp that was excruciating but that has been gone since then and idk what the deal is with my skin. I feel like I'm ready to start scratching my skin clean off. I also feel shaky and tense like I have adrenaline surging through my veins. It awful!

  • Sorry, no. Give me all the sleep all the time. Can someone tell LO that?
  • I consistently wake between 5-5:30 and don't have to be up for work until 6. Most days I can't fall back asleep. LO has been STTN for close to a month, and this wasn't even a wake up time for her so I'm not sure why it keeps happening.
  • I have anxiety about falling back to sleep after LO wakes up. He is so unpredictable and wakes 2-4 times a night. I take Nyquil, benadryl or unisom. That helps. The benadryl might help your itching, but it gives you crazy dreams
  • I have similar problems, though they don't sound as bad as yours. LO STTN pretty regularly, but on the rare occasion that he does wake up (usually around 4am) there is zero chance of me falling back to sleep. Usually I lay awake until he gets up again for the day around 6 or 7, then after I feed him DH takes over and I get a couple more hours of sleep. This works fine now as we are both teachers, so we are both home for a few more weeks, but I guess I'll just have super early wake up time when school starts. I also had a similar skin issue, but it was localized to just one arm/hand. I used hydrocortisone cream and got some relief, and it also felt better when I just let my arm soak in the tub while giving LO his bath. Hope you feel better soon, it really sucks trying to care for a baby when you feel like garbage.

  • Is it possible you're having a reaction to something you use? A soap or lotion or something you eat maybe? That's a pretty weird set of symptoms, I would call the dr.
On a side note, the Aveeno oatmeal bath is really great for itchy skin due to common causes, and it's relaxing to soak in.
  • I've had insomnia since middle school, and it sucks. I'm unable to fall asleep most of the time when LO naps, and sleeping pills are the only way I can get any sleep at night. Usually takes me a few hours to fall asleep, too.

Like I tell people: I can't sleep because I drink energy drinks, I drink energy drinks because I can't sleep!

  • DD1 is a bad sleeper. DD2 STTN. And I have insomnia hardcore.
  • Are you talking about the Tylenol simply sleep? I don't know what might be causing the itching, but it sounds like the medicine itself is making you anxious. When I take over the counter sleep aids or Benadryl I get soooo exhausted but at the same time I just want to do laps around my house. Worst feeling EVER. I've had serious insomnia all my life and I have to take ambien just to get just a few hours of sleep. But OTC sleep affect everyone differently, some people they do more harm than good.
