STMs with older kids- ISO potty training tips

OK, I know this is probably not the best place to post this, but I am not active on the January 2012 board and I know that some of you have older kids. You all give great advice on pretty much everything else baby related, so I figured I would see if any of you have some potty training tips that worked with older siblings.

I work full-time and DD goes to daycare. She is 2.5.  Before her brother was born, she was really close to being trained (dry diaper all day long at daycare, even through naps). She has "big girl underwear" (doesn't wear them often/will sometimes wear them over a pull-up) and some days I can get her to go on the potty a couple of times. She gets 2 M&Ms if she pees, a lollipop if she poops on the potty (but she wont poop on there). She lets me know as soon as she pees or poops in her diaper/pull up. Help!

Poop is scary for a lot of kids. My son would scream anytime he had to poop when we first started potty training. Not a lot of advice but when they are ready they'll do it. I would say that I'm of the all in philosophy though. Once he was ready (3years for him) we went to underwear and never went back to diapers. He used pull ups, aka special underwear, at night for a couple of weeks and he was dry so we stopped that.

eta: I am a SAHM so he didn't have different settings. Not sure how much that matters.

  • I think what you're dealing with is incredibly normal. My DD is 2 months younger than yours and she's in big girl panties all day with no accidents, which is great, but still has a wet diaper during naps and over night. And she will only poop when left alone in her bedroom, in a diaper... She needs the privacy and to be standing. I'm happy for her to move at her own pace.

  • We did the cold turkey method. No pull ups or anything. Diapers just gone. Take a long weekend, stay home, we had a few messes, took about a week and DS (2.5 then) was fully trained. Even at night. it's a lot of work and laundry, I was sending 4-5 changes of clothes to day care but worth it for us.
  • I had $1 toys from the RAS bin at target. When she pooped she got tge toy. I put the potty in the livingroom and she went nakie. She also got a mini mini kit-Kat when she went. Poop was easier at first then a week into being potty trained she started withholding her BMs.
  • DD was just about 3 when she was fully potty trained. One day she just went on the potty and from there we decided to just not to diapers anymore. We went on a family vacay and decided we wouldn't bring any diapers with us, and that was the end of it.

  • DS is pretty awesomely potty trained (except sleeping) for peeing. We do put him in a pull up when we're out but if we take him to the bathroom in a store he will go...although he hates big potties, which is why we still do the pull up - I know a lot of people are opposed to this but it's working for us for now.

As far as BMs, we are in your exact same boat. If he's having a BM and he's sitting on the potty, he will actually jump off the potty and run into a corner and throw a fit if we try to talk to him. Since he's having such an emotional reaction we haven't been pushing it...so basically no advice here but I do commiserate.

We do treats for pottying - 1 M&M for sitting, 2 M&Ms for peeing, and we have been offering a fudge stripe cookie if he poops but it's not helping. He really doesn't care if we're offering him a cookie, a Disney vacation or whatever, he's not going for it.

  • I don't have much advice on how to PT a home in conjunction with daycare, but we just started PTing at home last Thursday and are having a lot of success with this method...

    - she has always been very anxious about actually sitting on the potty and trying to go even though she loves to pretend to potty with her animals and dolls and has a little potty song she sings. A big step for us was getting her to try...so we went to target and picked out a special "potty pal" (hers is a little stuffed dog but it could be any small toy) -- she got to pick it out herself and she only gets to hold it while she's sitting on the potty.
    - she also picked out stickers that she gets to put on a chart if she will sit on the potty and try for 3 minutes. The stickers and the toy got her excited about trying.
    - she gets 1 M&M if she actually pees and 3 if she poops.
    - when we are at home, she is wearing only underwear if she's awake. She is not motivated at all to go when she is in a diaper.
    - She wears a pull up if we're going out but she's still really afraid of public toilets. I'm not pushing that yet -- I ask if she wants to go look at the public potty / try, and if she does, great; if not, that's okay, too.
    - diapers at night and for her nap. She still poops in her sleep a lot and wakes up with a very wet diaper. I don't think she's developmentally ready to PT at night / nap.
    - we keep all our "gear" in a basket in the bathroom (underwear, stickers, M&Ms, chart, timer). I think the visual reminders help.

  • Thank you for all of the tips! I am struggling with trying to figure out if she is ready or not. She was sooooooo close before! I am definitely going to try some of those things though. Plus I just found out she is moving up to the 3 year old room so maybe some peer pressure will do her good in the potty training area [-O<

  • I agree ditch the pull ups except for at night and naps. They feel like a diaper so there's no motivation to go. We had a seat right on the potty so she couldn't just get up and walk away and I really think that helped. We had a special book that stayed in the bathroom where we would find things inside of the book. That would take her mind off not wanting to be in there. We brought her potty seat EVERYWHERE with us for consistency and made sure she went to sit on the potty every 20 mins at first. Took about a week a few accidents which she hated feeling and she hasn't looked back since. Still wears a pull up at night but she's dry 9/10 nights. She's been potty trained since she turned 2 in February.
