Feeding question

I'm thinking I might call the pedi just to be on the safe side but wanted to run it by you ladies first. LO has always been a good eater. He took a bottle easily and would eat between 30-35 oz daily. We're up to two meals of day and 5 bottles (one being MOTN). The problem is that he won't take more than 4-5 ounces usually. This means we're averaging closer to 20 oz a day now. He still has wet and dirty diapers and doesn't seem too phased except that his MOTN bottle is usually his big one.

Soooo, long winded way to ask: normal? Any way to encourage more milk during the day and less at night?

Re: Feeding question

  • I think normal. My pedi said that once you start introducing solids 2x per day, I could expect to see W's bottle consumption go down to 22oz per day.

Definitely call your pedi if you're worried, but mne warned me about that the day he said we could start solids.

  • Thanks @codypup.  Mine has barely said anything to me about these things.  I think she figures since it's my second rodeo I should know what I'm doing, but I honestly can't remember!!!  She looks at me strange when I ask questions like this.  I really might look into a new pedi....
  • 20oz is still within the normal amount for milk consumption. I wouldn't let it get much lower than that because you do want his nutrition to primarily be milk/formula before age 1.  The only thing I'd think the pedi might recommend is offering milk before solids so you're not replacing milk feedings.

  • We do offer formula first already. It's like he knows food is coming and can't be bothered with a bottle :)

@lalaprep We just went up a size in nipple flow. It helped but not a ton.

    Thanks for the advice ladies!
