My son calls MIL~ Nana

Trying to get him to say something for my mom, but he can't say Grandma. We've been trying Grammy.

He tries to say Grandma and Grandpa for my ILs and it comes out like mawmaw and poppop which I think is adorable so I'm trying to encourage it.  I have a nephew around the same age as N and he calls my mom Bebe (she encouraged it) and even though I hate it I am going with it because I don't want him confused. I think my mom is going to want N to call her longtime BF Mr. Chuck, and I'd rather it just be Chuck, but whatever.

  • for my in-laws- nana and papa (all their other grandkids already called them that)
my mom- reeree (a nickname from her first name- we encouraged it as a cute alternative to grandma, although she doesn't mind being called grandma)
  • My MIL comes up with something different that she wants to be called every other day, but for now its Ya-ya, which is easy for DD to say.  So the ILs are now Ya-ya and Grandpa Mac (FIL's name is Mac).

My nephew calls my parents Grandma and Pop-Pop, so that's what they want my kids to call them, too.  At first I was just calling my Dad "Grandpa" but now that the FIL is going to be Grandpa Mac, I guess it will be less confusing to call my Dad "Pop-Pop."

The grandparents seem very concerned about what they're called :)  The only one that DD can say now is Ya-ya.

BFP #1 9/2010 (lost our baby at 21 weeks) BFP #2 8/2011 (ectopic pregnancy) BFP #3 10/2011 (chemical pregnancy) BFP #4 12/2011 (Abigail born 8/15/12) BFP #5 5/2013 (Griffin born 1/23/14 with heart defects, now repaired!)

sdlaura My ILs don't seem to care, but my mom sent out an email before either of the grandson's were born telling us to start thinking about what we wanted them to call her.  My eyes were rolling let me tell you.  I mean...he's almost 2 and just now starting to say people's names.
  • My parents are memere and pepere and my inlaws are grandma and grandpa

  • My parents are Nonna and DD (my dad's initials, he has always signed everything DD anyway). MY mom was originally going to be Noni, but DS started saying Nonna instead so she decided to go with that. ILs are Gran Gran and Grandaddy (named by niece and nephew who are older).

My parents are Nonnie (Nana as crafted by my nephew as a toddler) and Saba or Baba (Hebrew for Grandpa). My ILs are Grandma and Papa - DD's actually pretty good at saying Grandma but her cousin (also an August 2012 baby) wont even try yet. My grandma is G.G./Gigi (for Great Grandma), and DH's grandparents are Granny, Oma, and Opa (German for Grandma and Grandpa).
  • Jeffrey calls both sets the same thing - granny and papa. He only sees my inlaws twice a year so he hasn't really had a chance to develop much of a relationship with them.
  • My parents are Gramma and Grampa, though DD sees them so rarely that she doesn't call them anything yet. H's mom will go by Noni but same situation so far.

H's dad is Papa...the one name DD knows so far! H's stepmom changes her mind all the time but I think it's Nana.

  • My mother insists on being called "Nannie" and my father is Papa D (his first name is Dwayne.) My mil is Mawmaw Pat and fil is Pawpaw Rick.

  • We refer to them all as grandpa and grandma.  Here's what DD actually says:

    My dad = Bapa
    My mom = Gamma
    DH's dad = Bapi Firstname
DH's stepmom = her first name (it rhymes with grandma, so it works!)
  • DD2 doesn't call the grandmas anything yet. For now both Grandpa's are Papa. My dad will eventually be Grandpa. DD1 calls my parents Grandma and Grandpa and my MIL picked their names, Noni and PawPaw.

  • My mom is Babci - DD has gone with different things for this including Baba and now it is Babi.
My dad is Dzidzi, yes she could say this one before most other names.

MIL - grandma or grammy. DD hasn't really doesn't care and she is the first grandchild
FIL - grandpa though he has said papa to her so we will just let her pick I guess.

  • She says gramma and grandpa mostly for two sets, sometimes g-ma and g-pa or papa for short. She calls my mom Mimi.

My dad wants her to eventually call him Nonno or maybe Kimosabe (for serious); he isn't sure yet. Good luck with that dad!

(There is precedent of grandparents naming themselves in my family and it's apparently a BFD - they spend months thinking about it!)

  • MIL decided she wanted to be Nana, so that's what she is. My 3.5 yr old came up with FIL's name a while back, so he is Papoo.

My dad is BaPa, courtesy of my 5.5 yr old niece. My mom passed away 6 yrs ago, but I refer to her as Nina to my kids because that's what I wanted her grandma name to be (a take-off on a nickname she had).
