Re: When did you potty train?

  • Started potty training both of my older boys at 18 months, they were both fully potty trained by 2 1/2. So it took about one year from introducing the idea, to getting them in underwear with no accidents during the night.

    Trying to Conceive Ticker
  • We started at 2.5, but it didn't click until about 3.25. Now at almost 3.5 we are wearing underwear with no accidents during the day. Still wearing a diaper at night (mostly because DS never gets out of bed - in the mornings he waits in his bed for us to go into his room to get him up), but he wakes up dry 70% of the time.
  • DD started using the potty at her own initiative, sporadically, around 17 months. We just followed her lead and by a little past two, daycare suggested we start sending her in underpants. She's 2 years 7 months and has been accident free several months now. We still wear pullups at night because lazy.

Fwiw, potty training was completely painless for us because we totally let her do it- other than reminding her to go frequently when we first switched to underwear, we had no negotiating or struggles - I think they'll do it when they are ready and trying to force it to soon will just prolong it.

  • DS1 was 2.5 yrs when we started trying, but he wasn't fully day trained until 3.

Z turned 2 on March 31st, she's been potty trained since the first week of June.

This includes night time and naps. I'm so glad she's not a bed wetter, because I was a horrible bed wetter.

  • I voted for "2", but it was really 2.5. Some people were pushing me before she even turned 2, but I knew she wasn't ready. My Mom has always insisted that "the magic age" is 2.5, but of course, that isn't true either. Still, I'd heard that from her my whole life, so 2.5 was the age when I decided I would try. She was good to go within about 4 weeks with very few accidents after that. She was night time trained almost as quickly as she was day time trained.

I don't really have any advice or tips because I don't think there really are any magic ways to make it work. Kids are just ready when they're ready.

A little story about Nora's early PT days: We started in October, and by the time we traveled from Tennessee to Nova Scotia for Christmas, she was completely accident free. She completely refused to wear a pull up while traveling. I was SO nervous, and we had a near-miss in a long line through customs. She was being SO good but kept insisting that she HAD to go potty. People kept ushering us in front of them and complimenting her on how polite she was being. We thankfully made it.

  • I would have voted two because she was pretty much done at 2 3/4 but when we sent her back to daycare after holidays they put her back in pull ups. Then it wasn't until after 3.

  • I waited until DD asked to wear underwear. she was 2 3/4. trained in 3 days. Nap trained a month later. two months later night time trained. (This success offset the horrible sleeping (didnt SSTN until 15 months).

My best advice: wait until they are ready it goes a heck of lot easier. Most people I know who started early and pushed it were still battling a year later.

  • SS because I have two. DS trained at 3.5 and DD trained shortly after turning 2.

  • We tried unsuccessfully just after he turned 2 and then he PT'd in about 1 day shortly after he turned 3.

  • Thanks for all the info. I definitely don't want to push it until he's ready. I'm just a little confused because he keeps showing all the classic signs of being ready. He even talks about wearing big boy underwear or using the potty. Then when the time comes to actually do it, he asks for diapers. He turned 3 in June.
I kind of feel like he needs a push, but I don't want to traumatize any of us so I'm just going with the flow for now.
I'm a teacher and next week is my last week home. I was really hoping to tackle it this summer, but it's not looking good. Oh well.
  • We started trying at 18 mos and several attempts between then and 3. It wasn't until he turned 3 and decided he wanted to that we were successful though. He's only had one accident since, and it was at night.
  • Started at 2 years 5 months and took 3 days to try day and night trained. Had a few accidents at daycare if he was playing and didn't want to stop for another 2 months off and on but we have Ben accident free since then.

I firmly believe that for most kids when the are ready they are ready.

  • It took a while. The big one isn't the suggestible type and does things on his schedule. We started around 2.5 or so. He wasn't entirely ready and we werent entirely committed.

He was pee-trained MONTHS before he was poop-trained. He shit his pants daily, sometimes multiple times a day, for close to 6mo. About a week before I had the twins, out of nowhere, he started to poop on the potty.

    And that was that.

He still wears underjams to bed though. I'm not pushing nighttime readiness. That will happen when it happens.

  • We got him used to the potty around 2.5, then waited until he was 3 to really do it. I think it went pretty fast because we waited until he was a little older and ready.

  • Reese was 3 years and 3 months. She was completely ready. She packed up her diapers to give away and was seriously trained in 3 days. (bedtime she has a pull up). After the third day she hasn't had an accident (we are a month in roughly) and she lets us know when she needs to go. We tried last summer when she was 2 and after 3 days of it, just put it on the back burner--she wasn't ready at all.

  • She was 2.5. Well, she was completely pee trained at 2.5, she is almost 3 now and is just getting into pooping on the potty. But, she has had major constipation issues for 9 months and has been on daily pedialax for 6 months. Pooping is something that is very scary for her.

FWIW, she started showing signs of readiness for at least six months beofre she was ready. Every kid is different. Try it, he'll let you know.

  • She started using the potty a week before she started PreK, so she was about 3 1/2. Yeah ... we were cutting that one close, lol.

  • We tried a few weekends ago with no luck, and will try again in a month or so. She's 20 months, and will tell you every time she peed and wants a new diaper, but isn't really getting the hang of telling you beforehand.
