Time to stop inconsistent sleep habits?

DS's 4 month appointment is coming up and sleep is a big issue I want to bring up. But I'm afraid I'm going to get a slap on the wrist for inconsistency. Here is how DS's sleep has been:

7 am nap - fall asleep in ergo, nap in RNP.

10 am, 1 pm, and sometimes 5 pm nap - is cared for by MIL and she's been putting him on his stomach in the crib... I know, bad. But she stays right with him and it's the only way he's been taking naps lately.

Bedtime - nurse to sleep, in the crib on his back with magic Merlin suit. If he wakes up and won't go back to sleep sometimes I'll put him in RNP of desperate.

Wow.. So inconsistent. How about you guys? Should we start trying only one way for sleep this week before our appt?

Well I really love our doctor, I was more concerned with the stomach sleeping during the day and back sleeping at night. I know peds are usually pretty strict about stomach sleeping. (DS isn't rolling yet). Also DS always needs something to get him to sleep... The ergo, bouncing, the boob. I know this needs to stop, but I'm not sure if having inconsistent sleep locations/positions has something to do with it.

  • Sounds normal to me! If it's working for you & LO I wouldn't be worried. Also, if he is being monitored while stomach sleeping he should be okay!
  • Personally I think that its better that your LO is able to fall asleep more than just one way. I would be more worried if LO had only one thing that ever worked - that can be harder to transition I think.

Most babies this age still need help falling asleep - if your pedi says otherwise they are a big fat liar! That's why there is a whole market out there for sleep books and so many cautions about starting sleep training before 6 months.

Try not to worry and keep doing what works.
  • That's a lot more sleep than C has ever gotten.  I'm not really sure what the problem is?   If you're worried about the stomach sleeping, then I would say to just ask your MIL to gradually try putting him to sleep on his back, or in the RNP, or whatever.  But if he will truly only sleep on his stomach, and she's literally right there in the room, then I think you gotta do what you gotta do.  Personally, I'd kill for a nap schedule that consistent.
