OT: Merits of menstrual cups (Diva, Lunette)

Kinda random posting to a group of fellow pregger ladies about menstrual solutions but I thought you all might have some insight. A couple of work friends and I were discussing the the explosion of the number of ladies we know who have ditched tampons and pads/lady cloth in favor of menstrual cups. I jumped on board after the birth of my second. My OB raved about them for vaginal health so I decided to take the plunge. I thought, hey, if I cloth diaper my kids to be eco and body friendly I might as well try a greener approach myself. Results: I LOVE IT.

However, two of the women at lunch looked at us like we had 3 heads. They had never heard of them. Maybe my circle of friends are all just drinking each other's Kool-Aid.

Are they that rare? Any other fellow cup devotees out there?

  • MandJS the stick at the end drove me crazy, too. So I cut it off. Problem solved.

I will say that the critical piece of instruction that helped me find utopia was to fold, insert and THEN turn the entire cup 180 degrees. It was key for me to ensure that the suction was established and the cup was inserted correctly.

I LOVE mama cloth, too. Like cloth diapers, it is addicting :)

  • I love my diva cup, I had mine for over 6-7 years, maybe it's time to get a new one before this pregnancy is up since I'll be over 30. I don't exactly talk about it a lot to people IRL. It can't be complete gross to some people to go up and retrieve it.

  • I used to use Instead when I was in dance since I hate tampons and regular pads annoy the hell out of me (the adhesive always used to flip around and stick to an ass cheek, no damn good).  The only problem was it caused me to cramp.
I did like that you could wear it during sex though.  I tried using Instead again when we went to a waterpark and liked it okay for that, but I would rather use cloth pads full time.

  • LOVE mine!
  • I LOVED the  softcup.. been using it for over a year before this pregnancy. It has been over a year since I used tampons and it has been amazing.

  • I have a Mooncup UK & liked it, but *hated* emptying it/cleaning it. Esp in public, the few times I had to. I heard a few accidental IUD expulsion stories related to cup use, so I stopped using it completely after I got my IUD. I actually just had to replace an IUD in a patient last week after her strings got caught as she was taking the cup out. I will never use a cup again b/c I definitely want to get an IUD at my 6wk postpartum visit!!
  • I ADORE MY CUP. I can't imagine ever using a tampon ever again. I have my Diva and a few cloth pads and just leave it at that. So much less expensive, so much less drying.

  • I love mine. I've converted loads of my friends and now we all rave about them. BUT I've definitely had some Wtf reactions from other people. I think their popularity is growing and I'm really surprised when I find someone who's tried one and hasn't liked it - it seems to happen so rarely! ( only one of my friends who gave it a go didn't like it). But I guess there is still an element of 'wait you stick that up there and then you clean it out and whaaaaat????' Lol.
  • @MandJS‌ yup, cups are supposed to be fine with IUDs! There is no evidence that they increase expulsion risk (though I don't believe it's been formally studied). I'm irrationally relying on my anecdata -- if I loooooved my cup I'd probably go ahead & use it. ;)
  • I LOVE my Diva cup. It is cheap, environmentally friendly, and SO awesome! You seriously forget you're having your period...I only have to empty it a few times a day and can pretty much forget I'm bleeding. IMO there is no learning curve - it isn't difficult to use and it isn't difficult or gross to empty. I mean, dumping the blood is kind of gross, but if you're getting it on your hands or something, you're doing something wrong.

So yea, I think menstrual cups are great for your health and the environment, are money savers, AND make your period a breeze.
  • I had no idea what a dive cup was, so I googled it......im a little grossed out....maybe its because I am currently queasy but idk how I feel about cleaning a bloody cup with a toothbrush...

I don't clean mine with a toothbrush...I just rinse it out and I boil it at the end of each cycle.
  • I have been using the diva cup for 10 years and can't even imagine life without it. :)

  • I love my diva cup! I have a couple of friends (my more "crunchy"/natural friends) who use them or seem interested in them when I talk about them. The rest of my friends/co-workers act like I'm crazy and think the idea is gross.

  • I agree, no toothbrush required. Boil after each cycle.
  • Diva cup changed my life! Even the biggest tampons weren't enough for the first few days of my cycle, which are always super heavy... not a problem for the cup at all. I swear I have less cramping too. Mostly though: I just hate that "dry" feeling a tampon gives you. *shudder*
