Help! Baby will NOT take a bottle!

Ok ladies I need some major help! DD is 7 weeks old tomorrow and I've been trying once a day for 2.5 weeks to get her to take a bottle and it not happening! She chokes and gags and thrust her tongue so it's nearly impossible to get the nipple in her mouth. DH has tried with me out of the room and she cited so hard she finally just have up and went to sleep. I've tried about 5 differnt bottles and nipples and all with the same results. I go back to work in 3 weeks and I work 2 12 hour nights shift a week. My anxiety level about leaving her is ridiculous! Any advise?!

Re: Help! Baby will NOT take a bottle!

  • Are you using latex or silcone nipples? Slow or fast flow? If you plan to continue BF I recommend staying with slow flow until they wean from bottles. All my kids when they first started bottles had to use the latex nipples (softer then silcone) & slow flow. I also was never in the room when it was given. In addition whenever I nursed my babies I would hold their hand & that way whenever someone gave them a bottle they could do that too since they were use to feeding being a bonding thing. My sitter would get a kick of how all my babies would reach to hold her hand when drinking.

  • DD does best with the medela bottles and nipples. She gags and fights me whenever I try to give her any other bottle. Also, make sure the milk is pretty warm, when it comes out of the boob it is very warm so LO is used to really warm milk.

This is what helped us too - the milk needs to be about the temperature of when it came out of the boob is order for DS to drink!

  • We are getting a calma bottle to try. Very expensive ($20 a bottle), but worth it if my LO can take a bottle. The gagging and choking with the slow flow nipple on my Dr Browns are not working. The calma doesn't let any liquid out until the baby sucks. Hoping that solves our problem!
  • Mine's an odd duck, she prefers bottles to be straight-from-the-fridge cold.
I used whatever bottles we got given at the baby shower (both Avent classic and gerber first essential) and MiniMe took it just fine. I fed her the first time then handed her to my OH when she got going so she could get used to food coming from other people. It took her a few goes to figure it out but she seemed more likely to try eating if she was calm and if she had the nipple rubbed gently on her bottom gums first - not sure why that helped but it did.
