Pregnant after 35

Food aversions

Come on, we know you have them/had them.  What are they?  I'm hoping for some funny ones.

And, aside from french fries that we all seem to be unable to do without, any other cravings?

As for me, I can't seem to be able to eat chicken anymore :-& .  Protein in general is a bit of a challenge, which seems like a bad joke since I was Paleo/Primal pre-pregnancy (I'm still trying to stick to it, with more carbs - not going so well).

Cravings: mushrooms... and pizza.  I ended up eating a gluten-free pizza with soy-based cheese, since I don't eat gluten or dairy.  It was kinda... baaad.

Re: Food aversions

  • Anything sweet, bananas, yogurt, coffee. I also was pretty hit or miss with meat and foods with texture (like oatmeal). Thankfully all of my food aversions disappeared once my ms disappeared in both pregnancies. I have friends who have foods that they still can't eat and their babies are toddlers.

  • All day long ickiness has begun (morning sickness is a cruel joke of a name), but so far so good on foods.  I'm sure that will change.  As for when I was pregnant with DS, the thought of eggs grossed me out the entire pregnancy, even after my all day long ickiness subsided around week 14.  However, it went away after he was born...thankfully, since we have chickens and a ton of eggs. (See my profile pic for a shot of DS feeding said chickens)

  • @neonnoon - I was also paleo / primal before the pregnancy. I've totally given it up for the first trimester because I know how my last pregnancy went. I was completely unable to tolerate meat. Even the smell of it cooking made me vomit. And the smell of any grease splattered on the stove would wake me from sleep on the 2nd floor! I plan on going back to primal when the vomiting stops.

This pregnancy hasn't been quite as bad as the other. I can tolerate a small amount of meat for lunch or dinner. But mostly I want nothing to do with it, or any other food for that matter. Except mashed potatoes. I saw some in the hospital cafeteria yesterday and really wanted to pile up my tray with 2-3 servings and nothing else. But I made myself have a salad with it.

  • With my other 3 pregnancies  (all girls) I craved Mexican food 24 hrs a day the entire pregnancy. Now I can do without it. When I do eat it, it just isn't the same anymore.

  • When I was nauseous in the 1st tri I could only look at bread, pasta and potatoes. The only meat I could even remotely stomach was cold cuts lunch meat. Don't care that they tell you not to eat it. It was either that or nothing. And in normal life I am also a low carb, high protein type of eater. It was weird.

Now I stuff myself with everything, esp baked goods...

Last time around I had a horrible aversion to everything sweet. Couldn't even look at a cookie or a piece of chocolate till I was way past 8m along.

And both kids are girls, so don't rely on cravings as indication of baby's sex...
  • Meat in general, especially beef. When I see that dumb Arby's commercial with the 3 stacks of meat on a cutting board I have to look away, b/c I almost throw up in my mouth a little!  The last time I did eat beef, I made my own hamburger and wanted to put bacon on top, so we cooked bacon, I had to leave the kitchen, the smell was so awful, I couldn't stand it and then couldn't eat it either! And like @mattandlora --- I could still smell the bacon in the air and couldn't go near the kitchen for 2 days or I would want to vomit. Haven't been able to stomach bacon since then. My favorite 'junk' food before getting pregnant was Chinese takeout, yeah, not once have I craved it or even wanted to look at it and the past few days I don't even feel like rice right now.

But Mexican is a different story, I'm also dairy-free and doing very low carbs like whole wheat and brown rice, etc., but for several weeks all I wanted were burritos and tacos. I've given in and had some cheese. I finally got over the strong cravings, thank goodness.

Also have cravings for apples (eat 1 everyday), kosher dill pickles, bananas and PB&J on whole wheat toast or bagel.

  • It's different everyday for me. I can eat one thing on a Tuesday, the next day I want to barf lol! I do best with potatoes and pasta (starches) but I now can eat ice cream where before I didn't like it. Baby likes ice cream :)
  • After last night, I take back what I said about tolerating meat for lunch or dinner. One smell of it cooking and I was DONE. I had cereal for dinner.

  • no aversions for me so far. everything smells super strong to me some days and not so much others so I've been able to still eat what I normally would. My cravings so far have been for soup (same with last pregnancy/mmc) then yesterday I was craving a cheeseburger and fries which is soo not like me to crave fast food - I honestly can't even remember the last time I ate fast food!
