Random high(200-300s) and low sugars (30-40s) while pregnant. im just 5 weeks.

Im trying really hard to check often but sometimes I have a random high or low sugars. It scares me. ..am I hurting my baby when this happens?

  • Obviously you want to stay as stable as possible, but a little comfort my doctor gave me...  She said "Highs and lows are going to happen, it's inevitable.  But you want to make sure that the Extended highs and lows are limited."

Do you have a CGM?  When I was trying to get pregnant I set my alerts to 70 and 160 and then once I got pregnant dropped it to 70/140.  This way I can catch highs before they get too bad.

    You can do it!

    Are you on the pump?

CGM = continuous glucose monitor.  It's a small sensor that is inserted into your skin every X days (depending on brand) and test your fluids every few minutes to give you an approximate blood sugar reading.  It will tell you if your blood sugar is rising, falling, or steady and the rate at which it is rising or falling.  It will alert you if it goes above/below a certain (user set) threshold.  So for me I have it alert me if I go below 70 or above 140.

    I use the Dexcom G4 platinum.  https://www.dexcom.com/dexcom-g4-platinum

It has made a tremendous difference in my diabetes management.  My a1c before getting on it was in the 8s and I've been between 5.7 and 6.2 for this entire pregnancy.

  • Agree with all previous comments.  I found I was pretty prone to lows for the first 10 weeks or so.  Even a bit of extra walking would drop my sugars pretty fast.  Most of my highs have been pretty easy to figure out where they are coming from.  I have found that stress and heat have been pushing my sugars up more so then prepregnancy

Just keep testing.  If you can get a CGM they are a huge help but you can do it without as well.  I wear the sensor for the CGM built in to my pump (Minimed Veo) every couple of weeks but due to cost and insurance issues I don't have the funds to justify wearing it all the time.  When I don't have it on I test every two to three hours on top of the six tests a day my endo has set down as manditory (before meals, one hour after meals and before bed).  That usually means I throw in a mid morning and mid afternoon test as well.  The real advantage the CGM gives you is overnight.  While I feel any nightime lows really easily it is always good to have the data from those hours to make sure that your sugars aren't going wonky while sleeping.

  • I just came back from my first a1c and it is an 8.1. :( my onetouch ping tester was also off by 50 too low. Dr. said i am doing everything right...my tester was just not accurate!!!! It was giving lower numbers then I actually had.

Hang in there.  So you are on the ping?

Did you discuss a CGM with your doctor?

  • Hang in there. Getting your meter calibrated will help. I had a similar issue about two years ago and my a1c dropped pretty quickly as a result of getting the meter in check. *hugs*

  • They gave me a new meter...the ping came back fine when I calibrated it with the drops it comes with. I asked my Dr about a cgm. I will be getting one. Im just nervous cause I have to check if against my tester....and if my tester is wrong....then what good is it? Im nervous checking my sugars now. :(
  • Yea I have a one touch mini and this new contour tester then gave me. So ill use both if I feel I need to compare results.

Can you have another OneTouch meter on hand as a back up, that way you can use the same test strips? Also, are your strips current/not expired? (Just thought I'd throw that out there.) I mean, I love my OneTouch Minis and UltraLink, and they all use the same Blue strips.
Yeah, I have like 4 Minis, haha.

OP, glad you're getting a CGM!!
