Moses Basket or Bassinette?

So curious if anyone has strong opinions about getting a moses basket or bassinette for the first few months. I didn't get one with my first, but they are so precious, I am wondering if you've found some good reasons to consider them?

Re: Moses Basket or Bassinette?

  • I kind of want a bassinet and a rock n play. If I get either (or both) they will be used (consignment or craigslist) so the spend wouldn't be much. Didn't have either one the first time around but a lot of people seem to like those.

We used the pack n play that came with a bassinet till DD was about 4 months.  That worked for us because we used the pack n play now when we travel.  Going back, I wish we had known about the rock n play because DD had reflux and that was recommended by several other moms.  I would use that over a bassinet if I could only have 1.

I just had my little one 1 months ago and am using a Moses basket
He loves it. I think the baby feels safe and secure in it :)
  • I had to use fisher price snuggle bunny...it's like swing / bassinet my ds was preemie and had terrible reflux only thing he could sleep in and the weight limit was 25 lbs..he slept in it until he was like 4 months and could sleep flat.

  • Lurking. I found a Moses basket on Craigslist and my mom got us the rocking stand. I LOVED it. My baby was very cozy in it and I loved that we could carry it into other rooms for naps.

  • The rock n play ROCKS (ha).  Seriously, it's awesome.  Cheap.  Super easy to store (it folds up) and move (very light weight).  Removable, washable cover.  I've loaned it to at least three other mom friends who also raved about it.  That reminds me, I need to get it back!!

We used a Moses basket with our first. She slept in it until she was six months old. It allowed me to keep her beside my bed easily, she most definitely slept better in the snug space, and we could take her bed with us when we were away from home. I will definitely use it again.
  • We'll be using the bassinette that's been in the family for years. Not sure how long we'll actually use it since I'd like to get LO in the crib sooner rather than later. My main concern right now is that the pad in it is too small and it moves around easily because there's too big a gap.

  • I had borrowed a Moses basket for my first but didn't have a stand for it so it was on the floor. But I had a c-section and couldn't bend over to pick up DS so I couldn't really use it.
I had a bassinet for DS2 and loved being able to move it around the house. It was on wheels. It definitely got more use!
  • Thanks everyone-very helpful!

I used a regular bassinet for my first two and kept it next to the bed but found it difficult to bend over to lift the baby in and out, esp after having a c-section, so I'm getting a co-sleeper that attaches to the bed to make night feedings easier.  You can also put the side rail up and use it as a regular bassinet elsewhere.
  • We used a bassinet with our first and it was very nice to have.  We were able to use ours for almost 6 months b/c the one that we bought was a little bigger than most and our son was very average sized.  Another option to look at is a cosleeper- they have a lower side so you can put it right next to your bed.  It can be super convenient for middle of the night breastfeeding sessions (if you are choosing to bf).

  • With my dd I coslept from day one and didn't have a crib or anything. She moved to her own bed at two when she was completely potty trained and could use the bathroom at night alone. This time around I think I will get a bassinet or a hammock so I'm not holding a sleeping baby or constantly checking on it so much. I've read about about the motion of a hammock being very comforting.
