Pregnant after a Loss

ER again last night...Dr not helpful or hopeful

This past Thursday I went to the er over gushes of blood and was told I had a large subcronic hemitoma...happened again last night only worse so I went back...they refused to ultrasound and instead only did labs...along with a uti the Dr said my betas were lower than he would normally see at almost 9w...they were around 141,500 and he has me coming back tomorrow to take betas again...he said he expects them to drop and has already wrote me a script for the pill to assist in complete MC...idk anything at all about beta levels as I've never had them compared for anything other than MC before...is that a normal number for 9w or should I prepare myself for the worst news tomorrow??? I just don't understand how he can say it's already over without even attempting to check for a HB...I only ask because I know a lot of you wonderful ladies have had betas checked before...thanks in advance!

Re: ER again last night...Dr not helpful or hopeful

  • I am sorry you are going through this. Have you only been seeing the doctors in the ER or have you checked in with your OB at all?

    This list is from americanpregnancy.org

hCG levels in weeks from LMP (gestational age):

    • 3 weeks LMP: 5 – 50 mIU/ml
    • 4 weeks LMP: 5 – 426 mIU/ml
    • 5 weeks LMP: 18 – 7,340 mIU/ml
    • 6 weeks LMP: 1,080 – 56,500 mIU/ml
    • 7 – 8 weeks LMP: 7, 650 – 229,000 mIU/ml
    • 9 – 12 weeks LMP: 25,700 – 288,000 mIU/ml
    • 13 – 16 weeks LMP: 13,300 – 254,000 mIU/ml
    • 17 – 24 weeks LMP: 4,060 – 165,400 mIU/ml
    • 25 – 40 weeks LMP: 3,640 – 117,000 mIU/ml
    • Non-pregnant females: <5.0 mIU/ml
    • Postmenopausal females: <9.5 mIU/ml

    * These numbers are just a GUIDELINE– every woman’s level of hCG can rise differently. It is not necessarily the level that matters but rather the  change in the level.

I am so sorry that you are going through this. I have never had betas drawn that far along, so I am no help. I just wanted to say that I would insist on having a u/s. I would not take any medication until I have been shown that there was no longer a heartbeat. Maybe call your OB in the morning and ask for an u/s. ((HUGS)). Sending many T&Ps your way.

  • I have seen the ob once and had to demand an u/s to check to make sure it wasn't ectopic as I had a suspected last year...the gave the u/s last Wednesday and said everything was fine then Thursday I went in for the bleeding and they told me that the first one should have shown it but it didn't...I called the ob about it then and they said I had to be confused and refused a closer appt for a follow up...I went in yday before I went back to the er to sign a record transfer to get the hell outta that office and the lady said I only had ob records and didn't understand the need to transfer since I wasn't currently pregnant...they didn't even have me listed in the system with this pregnancy even though I've called a few times and had an appt and they scheduled one u/s and blood work...so they won't do anything for me...and idk y he wants betas so late especially if the numbers that site provides are right...if so mine look good to me...and I won't take anything until I see this new Dr...he is a highly recommended HR ob and insisted I come in ASAP when I called him to see if they would accept me...it's an hour and 20 min drive but will be work it if it's not over yet...I'm just so confused and upset and lost right now idek what to think

Lurking.... I would almost classify what that doctor did as malpractice. It's one thing to refuse an ultrasound, but it's another to look at a perfectly normal beta level, assume you are having a loss and prescribe you misoprostol. That is so completely insane to me, my mind is blown. Is there anyone else you can possibly see?

  • The only other place I can go is out of county to the dr I am transferring to because the office here is a joke and cares about no one and nothing but the money...so I have to wait until the records transfer and get an appointment up there...I won't take anything but the antibiotic because it was just so confusing to me that he would give it to me without definitive proof I had already MC...I don't think I'll even be going back to that hospital again for anything PG related...everything medical in the city I live in is sorry...and I have personal experiences for each place that make me feel that way too...

  • I agree with PP, that betas wouldn't really give you a clear picture right now. Its crazy that no ultrasound was done to at least check and see what was going on. Sending you hugs and I hope you can get in with a doctor soon to get a scan done to check on everything!

  • I would call the new OB and explain what is going on - he should agree to see you before the records are there.  The new OB doesn't NEED your old records to see you - I've changed OBs and my old records never made it over.

  • Agree betas are no longer a factor. Betas can be double or triple from one woman to another. Also at some point they start to drop off. Also up to 20% of all pregnancies have subchorianic hemorrages although many never bleed as they are reabsorbed. Compile that with the fact that up to 1/3 of all women experience bleeding in the first trimester and...well anyway...I agree I would report him! Malpractice! Ob/gyn are better and more qualified as they are specialists in the area! On babycenter there is a subchorionic hemorrages support group.

  • I will start this by saying I have no experience with miscarriage or betas.

That being said, there is no way I'd take anything without going to see my OB and having them check for a heartbeat.

  • Do not walk, RUN away from those doctors!!! Omg they both sound awful! I've had quite a few betas drawn and never past 5.5w. At 9w betas no longer matter. At that high they won't double anyways. An u/s is going to be much, much more accurate. Do not take anything the ER doctor gave you until you have an accurate u/s. I would even question if the antibiotics he gave you are safe while pregnant, seeing as how great his other medical advice has been.

I would call the new OB back and see if they can get you in before the paper work is transfered. You need to be seen soon and by some one who knows what they are doing. T&Ps that all is ok.

  • New ob will take me in a week...(better than the 4weeks my current offered)...and I live in Beckley wv...the antibiotics are keflex I believe and I know they are ok because I e taken them in two healthy term pregnancies...and I refuse to take the miso and the new ob agreed that I should not take it even if the betas come back not doubled or even lower than the first draw because they may have already started to drop and baby still be healthy...he wouldn't do an u/s because he said it wouldn't show them a clear enough picture as to loss or no loss and that the only accurate way to tell was the beta numbers...and I went to get the second draw just now and they won't even release the results to me unless I go back AGAIN tomorrow and request them in the records office...they also refused to send them to my new ob saying they had to send them to the old one...I'm so frustrated with both the ob and the hospital here...thanks for the support ladies
  • Weird...I have never heard this before...maybe he should take a refresher course! I have gone through 4 years of infertility and miscarriage and my RE in DC was one of the top in the country. Betas are good indicators at the very very beginning. At a certain point they even start to drop. At about 10k they will not double as quickly....I could go on and on and on At any rate report this doc! He could very well be terminating perfectly viable pregnancies! My doc is not even doing betas on me anymore! Sonograms only!

  • My betas have dropped...and I have an emergency appointment tomorrow morning to confirm loss...and tomorrow is my birthday...and DH says he wants to be permanently fixed...that he's done watching me go through this and believes the drs were right when I had my last loss...that I won't be able to have anymore children...the dr was reported by the new ob after I explained what happened over the phone...he will be required to have a board review...I don't even care about him...I'm just totally lost...
  • Holy $-)/): that is horrible! I am so sorry. Maybe your DH is just emotional and will calm a bit. If not I am a huge huge huge supporter of adoption. My DH and I are actually in the process if you are still wanting to expand your family. It is a wonderful/beautiful thing that gives a child a second chance. If you ever want to discuss it in the future PM me. I also have some info on my blog. I am so very sorry! That is heart breaking. My prayers are with you.

  • I've been treated pretty badly by doctors before but this sounds horrible. Ultrasound at 9 weeks would be one of the only ways to know loss or not. The problem with ER doctors is they are NOT OBs but will tell you all sorts of things about pregnancy. I would make sure the hospital knows what a crap job he is doing, regardless of how this turns out. He should never have written you a script for that without checking for a heart beat. Unless fetal demise is diagnosed, no meds should have been prescribed. I'm so sorry you're going through all this.
