3rd Trimester

Changes in eyesight while pregnant?

Hit 28 weeks today. Second child. My eyes have felt so tired and stressed all week. Putting on my glasses helps (only wear them at night or when driving if at all- don't need them daily). It feels like there's extra pressure or something and it's not fun. Anyone else experience this? Suggestions? This did NOT happen with first pregnancy. ..

Re: Changes in eyesight while pregnant?

  • Could be because of the extra blood in your body.  Talk to your doctor.

  • My eye doctor said it's not uncommon for eyesight to change during pregnancy and it may or may not return to normal afterwards. If it feels like pressure I would talk to your OB or eye doctor about it.

You can have changes in your eyesight do to extra blood flow and hormones. If it is really bothering you then I would call your optometrist. If you feel like your prescription is no longer working, they may not change it because there is a chance your eyes will return to their previous state, pre-pregnancy, after you deliver. But perhaps something else could be suggested.

    Edited for clarity.

  • I actually just got a recheck with my eye doc bc I felt like my vision was blurry through mynew glasses I just got the script for in January. Sure enough, the doctor gave me a new eye glasses prescription because it had changed in both eyes d/t pregnancy. He told me it was up to me though if I wanted to get new glasses or not since the prescription can change after delivery again. Although, he said if nursing it will take longer to go back.
  • Blood pressure can change eyesight also during pregnancy. I would mention it.

My eyesight always changes. It got better after one but not other
  • This is my 2nd pregnancy and both times I had to stop wearing my glasses because they were giving me headaches. It's like my vision goes back to 20/20 when I'm pregnant or something. Just an FYI, my vision isn't too bad normally and I just need the glasses for reading and when I am working on my computer.
  • I normally only wear glasses for driving, mostly at night and even then only occasionally.  When I was pg with DS I needed them much more during the day, my eyes got tired, I couldn't drive anywhere without them.  Within two weeks after delivering my vision was completely back to what it was previously.  It's normal.

  • Due to pregnancy and allergies, my contacts had been driving my crazy. I got new glasses for the first time in 10 years (I used to rarely wear them) and they are amazing. It turns out my eyes actually have improved with pregnancy but my eye doctor asked to see me again after baby arrives to see if we need to change my prescription again.
  • my eyesight got blurry during my first pregnancy in my 3rd trimester, to the point where I went to get my eyes checked incase i needed glasses (i didnt). After the baby was born, it went back to normal. With my second pregnancy now, it's happening again but I'll just see how it goes. As long as I am not bumping into things or causing danger!!
  • Mine have been really dry and sometimes I can't stand my contacts.
  • Mine got worse ... now are back to normal. However, my contacts would bother me faster while pregnant and still do.

However, the pressure would be something to look into.
