Diaper rash

My LO hasn't experienced a bad case yet, however I've been attempting to apply small amounts here and there to keep everything under control. Any tips on application without making a mess? My LO is a kicker and it seems like the cream goes everywhere but where I intend it to go! Thanks!

Re: Diaper rash

  • My only tip is to use a and d. I started with desitin with my first and it was messy and really hard to wash off. A and d works really well, is clear, and comes off if you get it somewhere you don't intend. Love it!

  • Lol, I figured as much, but was praying there was some mysterious ah-ha philosophy to it. Darn :)

  • I swear by Balmex! I don't think there is a secret. I had a big jar of Balmex open next to my newborn last night while I was changing her diaper, and she ended up sticking her whole fist in the jar, pulling it out and rubbing it all over her hair before I could stop her.

DS has a terrible rash right now. We've tried a few different things and are now onto Butt Paste. Did a baking soda bath and about 2 hours of bare butt time too. Hoping something makes it better for DS soon. I know rashes happen, but I feel so bad for the little guy.

Try Triple Paste if it doesn't clear up. I can't find the link right now, but I seem to remember there being three different levels of rash cream— A&D being basic, Butt Paste and zinc oxide creams like a mid grade, then thicker, truly barrier creams like Triple Paste be the highest. DS got horrible, horrible, bleeding, peeling rash from cutting molars and eye teeth, and the Medicated Desitin barely helped. Triple Paste cleared him up really well, though.

  • I know plain ol' pure vaseline jelly works
  • If a rash persists, get it checked out. There's a good chance it's mushrooms and will need a cortisone treatment.

Newborns can also get yeast infections, which resemble diaper rash, but diaper creams do nothing for them and are painful to the baby. If you think that might be what you're dealing with, a Google image search will be your friend to help confirm. You can treat yeast infections in babies over the counter using athlete's foot cream, the kind with 1% Clomiprazole. Apply just like diaper cream. They sometimes take a week or more to clear up, but you should start to see improvement within a day.

Thanks, I'm going to have to try this.  My 16m old has a horrible diaper rash right now the zinc oxide cream is helping but his butt still looks soooo sore.
