We asked our accountant about this for our 2013 taxes and we were told that we could claim the expenses if it were over 10% of our combined income. We didn't hit that amount last year with IF pretesting and 2 IUIs. We might hit it this year.

    Everything she said!!!

I'm sure y'all really do to want me to pull up the actual codes again. If I was technology smart as everyone else I'd link that post it but I don't even know how to find it.

Also don't forget to use all med cost. I keep a spreadsheet and I also use a credit card for all medical to make it easier at tax time. You would be surprised every trip to the pharmacy for all our other RX's adds up.

Yes pregnancy test are deductible, and of course your trip to go get them.

Good info.  I always wonder what a write-off looks like in teh big picture of taxes.  DH drives his own vehicle for work (30K+miles a year) and pays for his own gas.  I seriously think we end up with a $1,000-$2,000 refund---which, in the scheme of it, is nothing.  Hopefully this will help us more than that.

  • One thing to keep in mind is that the Medical deduction is not a direct credit to your taxes but a deduction to the income that is used to calculate the taxes: I've seen people get confused with credits and deductions.  Every little bit helps though and you should keep track of mileage, co-pays, coinsurance, over the counter supplies (supplements are NOT tax deductible unless you have a prescription for them), as well as direct medical costs like doctor bills and prescriptions.

Any thing you purchased using your FSA or requested reimbursement from your FSA is NOT tax deductible as that money was already exempted from income tax before you spent it and you can't take a double deduction.

Example: AGI $100,000, medical expenses $12,000.  The allowed deduction is $2,000 since 10% of the income is $10,000 and you cannot deduct that $10,000.  If you are in a 30% tax bracket this equates to a $600 reduction in taxes owed.

Also it is only worth deducting your medical expenses if your itemized deductions are greater than the standard deduction.

  • Our first round of IVF we saved every medical bill, copayment, IVF stuff, and anything we could think of to use. We gave it to our accountant and I received a couple thousand back. It really did help. I am saving everything this year for our taxes, including acupuncture receipts. Hopefully it will help. Last time I had two surgeries in one year, which added up. This year just normal dr stuff and IVF.

Yup. All of this.  We claimed medical deductions last year and depending on how much our RI testing and treatments cost, we may be claiming them again this year.

In most cases driving your own vehicle to work isn't deductible. When I had to use my vehicle for work to run errands

Im not real sure how the IRS handles acupuncture, my guess is no you don't have to have a RX BUT my declaimer that I put in that other thread about taxes on 3T. I haven't studied taxes since taking my CPA exam in 1998 and I haven't worked at a CPA firm doing taxes since then. So I'm really rusty on all the tax laws. I actually don't even do our own taxes anymore, mainly because we have multiple states and rental property. I know enough to make it very easy for our CPA, she loves seeing me.

    Fucking bump!!!!
  • ***sig*** One thing to consider is married filing separately. Assuming the majority of the deduction is on the wife for appts and treatments, a greater percentage of the medical expense could be claimed. If there is a significant difference between you and your spouse's income it could result in a better refund. We are claiming our ivf for the third year in a row. Definitely include ALL medical expenses for the year including dental, vision, etc. It's worth getting the help of an accountant.
