What incriments of milk do you freeze

LO is 4.5 months and currently drinks 6oz bottles. I had originally frozen in 4 oz incriments, then upped it to 5 oz when he started drinking that. I'm wondering if I should go back to 4oz bags to decrease waste or should I start freezing in 6oz incriments? When they start solids do they still drink the same amount of milk?

Re: What incriments of milk do you freeze

  • I have been doing 8oz increments to get the most out of the bags (I fill it past the 6oz mark on the Nuk bags).  Mostly because they take 4oz bottles still, so one bag would be one feeding.  I assume they kind of stay at the amount they are at when they start food because the food will fill up the growing stomach.  I am seeing the pedi Tuesday and will ask him.  I don't know how I can ask my boobs to start making more since I EP.

  • I used to do 6 oz increments and I would get two bottles out of it. It seemed to work well.

  • DD1 never upper her intake from pumped breast milk.  She always took 4oz.  DD2 will take 4 most of the time so I freeze in 4 oz increments mostly but always make sure I have a couple of 2 oz frozen bags too, just in case she needs more.

  • We don't move getting 4oz but we don't ever give more than 4oz. I wouldn't go beyond 6oz just incase of bag failure.
  • 4-5 oz. He takes a 5 oz bottle.

  • I was doing 3, just upped to 4. But I almost always mix frozen with fresh. I don't think I've given a bottle of just frozen...

  • I use Lanisoh bags and do 6 or 7 oz (the bags are marked for 6). I freeze them flat even though it doesn't recommend that because they store and thaw easier. I use give them to my MIL if she watches Jack for a few hours, generally it all gets used and there is no waste.
  • 3 oz. because I make 3oz. bottles. Not really sure if that's the best thing.

  • 5oz because that is the mark on the medela bags. Haven't really thought about it.
  • I've been doing 1oz portions using milk cube trays. Then I'll put 4-5 portions in 1 bag. This way I can control waste as I can simply thaw 1oz at a time if needed. Seems to work!
  • All of mine are 4oz. Kid isn't a big eater.

  • We only do 4 oz bottles I'm not planning on upping his intake per what I've read on here & from his pedi. Therefore I freeze 4oz portions

    This is a great idea!

I used to do 3 - 3 1/2 oz depending on how much I pumped, then I switched to 4 oz.  I do a couple of 2 oz bags every once in awhile just in case DS wants a little more.   Currently DS will take 4 oz. when given a bottle.

  • 6oz just because the bags are expensive and I go through a ton of them. I've heard if you do more than 6oz they are much more prone to leak.

  • I do 3 ounces. LO eats 3oz ever 2 hours at daycare. I have a few 2oz bags if I don't have enough for a full bag..
  • DD usually takes 3.5-4 oz so I usually freeze 4 oz. I also freeze a few 2 oz just in case she ever needs more.

  • I do 3 oz because DS takes 5, 3oz bottles at daycare. With BF babies I've been told and read that you never feed more than 4oz at a time. Based on the number of times I nurse and how often DS eats (every 1:45 minutes like clockwork) he should never have more than 3oz so that's what I freeze. If I've pumped more or less I may have some 1-2oz bags frozen as well.

  • Freeze 5oz at a time & that's how much he eats so it's pretty simple for us.
