Cereal in bottle?

I've heard this can be a controversial topic, but I don't know much about it so here goes:
(Preface: yes, I will be asking my ped about this, obviously)

Are any of you ladies putting rice or oat cereal in LOs bottle? Was this for reflux, constant hunger, or something else? When did you start? Did your ped reccomend? Has it been working?

DS has reflux and is on Zantac. Lately he's been waking up every 1.5 hours wanting to eat (I've tried soothing every which way and he just wants the bottle). Problem is if I fed him each time he woke up he would be eating way over 32 ounces per 24 hrs. I'm hoping maybe adding some cereal in his night time bottles may help him sleep a little better and not wake up starving so often, maybe only every 3-4 hours?

(I've also tried making smaller bottles, but he cries for more and if I get him asleep will wake up 15-30 minutes later hungry again)

  •  I keep hearing about "open gut" and how you shouldn't give baby anything but formula/breast milk til they are 6 months, but I can't seem to find a legit study or website that explains it. I'm only finding info on other blogs and chats. I'm curious too.

  • I'm not but I'm almost positive @stephross88‌ 's pedi had her do this so hopefully she can lend some insight. I know it's been mentioned by 1-2 people on the formula feeding check in and I've also seen it discussed on the formula feeding board as well.

    @ElTrain5‌

My pedi is having me do rice cereal for reflux.. But so far in my experience, it doesnt make her any more full then regular formula would, it is just thicker so it doesn't come back up as easily.
  • My mum had to give me baby rice cereal when I was 1 month old because I had terrible reflux
  • My pedi is also having me feed my LO rice cereal for reflux. It has made her more full sometimes but she still eats about 5oz every feeding.
  • I don't see what would be wrong with cereal my lo eats some in her bottle before bed every night and sleeps great only wakes up for one more bottle in the night. I was doing a little in every bottle and it kept her from throwing up after every bottle but now it's just some before bed cause she is doing better about not throwing up and wanting to constantly eat. Plus some has fiber in it which will keep baby regular. We have a good system now and she poos oncea day now and eats way better. I got the idea for cereal from my mom and mil and it worked they did it their parents did it and everybody turned out fine so idk i've never really saw the big deal with cereal as long as your baby takes it well. It can't hurt to try you can always stop if it's not right for your baby.
  • yes @curlylocks3‌ is correct B has been on rice cereal in his bottles now but his reason is that he needs his feeds thickened to help with his swallow function. he has trouble swallowing really thin liquids. he might also possibly have reflux but that diagnosis is still up in the air. he's been getting it since he was 9 weeks old. If you talk to your pediatrician and they agree with doing it for reflux, weight gain, swallowing issues etc then there is nothing wrong with it. I would advise against doing it just to make your baby feel "fuller" or "sleep longer" because then you may be pushing your baby to do something they aren't ready for, like dropping feedings, although if you are doing it for medical reasons (which it sounds like would be your main reason for doing it) that may end up being a side effect but not always.

I will say that thickening his bottles with the cereal has immensely helped his spitting up and his Prilosec made his spitting up worse. so from a reflux standpoint it definitely helps. do not use oatmeal though only rice cereal at this age. oatmeal shouldn't be started until 6 months.
  • No input for the rice in the bottle... but could it just be that your LO is going through a growth spurt and maybe needs to eat a butt ton right now? I know it's frustrating but it could just be a phase.

Totally possible, but my ped said not to go over 32 ounces of formula in 24 hours....so what to do if he's still screaming for more?

  • My doctor mentioned this as an option down the line if ds's reflux didn't improve. Fortunately sleeping at an incline was enough to resolve the issue for now.

  • Our pedi mentioned doing this as way to help Wynne's reflux calm down. We are giving Zantac a try first though.

  • My baby's pediatrician and pulmonologist keeps recommending a small amount of cereal in the bottle to thicken up feeds to help with reflux. That was a month or more and I haven't done it yet because I breastfeed her if I'm with her and I don't understand how it will help reflux. Tonight we will be trying it for the first time.

Interesting. Our ped said do oatmeal, NOT rice, due to arsenic levels in rice.

Who knows. I haven't done it yet - we too are in the "thicken for reflux" camp.

  • @jclester614‌ that is interesting! I've never heard that. my ped told me never to do oatmeal.
  • @jclester614‌ I have heard this too =\ but the ped said to add rice cereal to her formula.. We did about 10bottles and she just wasnt sitting well with it, so we switched to Enfamil A.R and so far so good!
  • What @kaysa2‌ said! I ask our ped about the 25-30oz rule and he said if he is giving hunger cues to feed him. Some days he'll eat 35-40oz.
  • Peaches is on Zantac, too. Dr said we could try some cereal in a bottle but she really only takes a bottle when she is with a sitter so it wasn't really applicable for us.

I asked him about the buzz words about "open gut" and supposed higher incidence of autoimmune and intestinal disorders and he said that has never been proven and people have been putting cereal in bottles for forever, long before it was trendy to be gluten-free, etc. My doctor is young and very modern so I felt confident with his answer, knowing he is not old-school or new-school, just up-to-date.

I'd rather have that than the random little jars of marmite that I see sometimes. Because yuck.

  • It sounds like your LO is comfort eating because of the reflux pain. My three kids have all done it. Until I got them on a med that worked, they constantly ate and had an over active stomach. The milk soothes the pain but then restarts the cycle. This is also why my reflux babies never had trouble putting on weight really fast and borderline too much. I would ask about Prevacid. Once my kids went on Prevacid, their eating schedule was more obvious and the snacking here and there went away.

Marmite is gross! Give me vegemite anyday! ;)
Marmite is amazing. We grew up eating Bovril as well. Same sort of taste but made from beef. With marmite you either love it or hate it, there's no in- between I don't think.
