Very conservative doctor...

Hey ladies!
What has your doctor recommended for constipation? Medication wise. My doctor is very conservative and doesn't even approve Tylenol which I know a lot of others do. Not trying to go against what my doctor says, but I'm in serious need of some relief and headed to the drug store for whatever will work. I've been eating fiber rich foods for the past few days and have been drinking enough water to fill a swimming pool, to no avail.
Thank you!!

I know this has been discussed before but I'm on mobile and can't search! :(

Re: Very conservative doctor...

  • My doctor hasn't recommended anything for mastication (chewing) but I do take a gummy fiber every day and drink a lot of water. I think it has helped that in craving a lot of fruit too. For medication, my doctor recommended colace.

@jaztastic I misread fiberall as fireball, as in a fireball shot! Hmm, the fiery alcohol may help if used as an enema

  • **TMI Alert!**
This problem has quickly gone from uncomfortable to extremely painful. I almost passed out while trying to "go".
I think maybe it's time to try an enema. This is awful!
  • Coffee! I tried everything- stool softeners did not help me (that's like colace) and fiber just built up inside me, making me feel worse. I broke down and started having 1 cup of coffee in the morning. Works like a charm. Caffeine is a great stimulant for the digestive tract.

  • Dried apricots and white grape juice helps.

  • I take a colace and two "Fiber Choice" tablets daily, in addition to drinking lots of water and eating lots of fiber-rich foods. That seems to help keep things in check. You may want to consider doing something similar. It's frustrating that doctors seem to assume that any constipation you experience can be easily fixed by diet alone - for me, diet can definitely help but even with a good diet, things are still uncomfortable. Heck, even with my current routine, things can get uncomfortable. (Sorry if that's TMI.)

I don't have advice on what to do for cases where things are painfully backed up, though. I usually just pray for relief :) Sounds like PP have made some good recommendations. GL!
  • Peppermint tea is great to get thins moving if you're doing the caffeine free thing
  • In regards to Tylenol,it may not be old fashioned. There were articles this spring correlating Tylenol use in pregnancy and ADHD. Of course, if all you can take in pregnancy is Tylenol, that may be forcing the correlation.

Perhaps ask about a suppository ?  I didn't have bad constipation while pregnant but it was horrible after my c-sections.  There was a point where I thought I was going to have to go back to the hospital for a poopectomy.

However, by the time of my third c/s, I wised up and asked for a suppository.  I got relief within the hour and I was so glad I went that route instead of waiting hours or days for other methods to work.

Since a suppository is only going up your bum hole, I can't imagine it would hurt the baby, but I am not positive about that.  I do know you shouldn't use suppositories a lot, but a few times here and there should be ok.

They also sound scarier than what they actually are.  Just get some gloves, some lubricant and push the suppository up there.  You might get the urge to poop because you are stimulating the rectum, but I would try to keep the suppository in for at least 30 minutes to let it do its job ( which is to "melt" the poop and make it softer to pass).

I know, I know the idea of it is icky, I thought that at first too, but I swear by them now and won't let myself get to the point of not having a BM for several days.
  • My doctor is ok with colace and miralax if it gets too bad. She also said that a ducolax suppository was ok.
