Breasts pain

Hi ladies,

I'm a FTM of an almost 4 weeks old baby and I've been experiencing this pain the last 3 days and my doctor is out of town until the end of the month so i wanted to see if any of u had an answer or experienced this before.

I breast feed and i pump once a day using the medela double electric pump and my breasts-not the nipples- started hurting 3 days ago.

The pain is all over both breasts and it feels like pins and needles almost like the uncomfortable feeling u get when its super cold and you'd get nippy except it isnt just uncomfortable it actually hurts. It doesnt seem related to feeding time i get it at random times during the day and night, keeping warm helps a little but doesnt resolve the feeling, massaging helps a little but only while i'm doing it, it doesnt resolve anything.

This isnt related to the pump as i started using it about 10 days ago and had no issues before. I'm also not engorged when in pain so i dont think its oversupply???

Re: Breasts pain

  • That sounds like a let-down feeling. Since your baby is still so little, your supply is probably just working itself out. Does it only last for a little bit?

  • I got a clogged milk duct once & it hurt in the breast but it sounds a little different. Just keep nursing & it should work itself out.

  • I went and saw a doctor and consulted another doctor they both said it's probably because my baby isn't emptying my breasts and I'm getting engorged. I didn't think I was engorged because when I wake up in the morning that's when I'm REALLY engorged my breasts are normally huge then and rock hard.

both doctors told me to pump after she eats if she hasn't emptied my breasts and it feels better afterwards but I'm worried it would cause me to have an oversupply.

when does the supply regulate normally?

  • but she is only nursing for 3 minutes at times and would start crying or sleep and stop feeding then and I'm left with huge engorged breasts :( if I don't pump then I feel like my chest is going to explode

  • I feed her the pumped milk, she used to nurse for half an hour or so then sleep for 3 hours when we came home from the hospital and would sleep for 4 or 5 hours at night but now her shcedule is all over the place and being colic makes things worse. She screams while nursing and would stop or sleep very quickly sometimes it is fast let down but some other times i have no idea why?! And then she naps for a very short time and gets up crancky. If she takes my milk in a bottle though she downs a good amount with no trouble then goes down for 3-4 hours am starting to think of exclusively pumping
