Which formula for supplementing?

Right now LO is EBF but I wouldn't know what formula to choose if/when I need to supplement. How do you know what kind to use? What are you all using and how/why did you choose that one?
I've seen Similac for supplementing, anyone know anything about that one?

Re: Which formula for supplementing?

  • I just asked this question yesterday :) similac (in general) is rumored to be harder on the tummy. I know Enfamil makes a supplementing formula as well. I haven't introduced either to DD yet.

  • When we had to supplement in the hospital and when I first came home we bought the Similac supplement formula. That's what they gave us in the hospital so DH went out and bought a tub before I was officially discharged. But, then discovered from the nursery nurses that they couldn't tell a difference in the formula ingrediants between that and the regular kind. Which I thought was interesting, AND made me mad to think about the extra $ I spent on this huge tub (of course it was only in one huge size at Walmart) that will now go bad since we only needed like 5 ounces total out of it before we went to EBF. I could have just used the sample I had received in the mail! No idea if the other brands are the same formula or not with just a different label.

I received some Enfamil Togo packet samples that I'm planning on keeping in her diaper bag just in case she's somewhere that I'm not and there is a bottle emergency. They're easy and I don't have to mess with a huge tub that may go bad again.

If we ever had to give formula more than an emergency bottle I would keep a tub of Baby's Only on hand.

  • Similac advanced is what I've been having to supplement with. It did seem to be a little rough on DD at first though.
  • I should say that LO does spit up curdled milk several times a day. We've also had some colicky episodes in the past as well but I attribute those to his need to spit up the curdled milk.

  • We use similac soy after some trial and error. We started with similac sensitive which she puked up every time, then we tried enfamil gentle ease which caused the same reaction, and we finally settled with similac soy. It varies with each baby as to what works best.

Another vote for similac soy- I EP and give the similac soy about half the feedings - after some vomiting in the hospital from similac advanced they switched DD to the soy and it seems so much easier on her stomach.

  • I've been supplementing with Enfamil supplementing formula. It seems to be working out so far, my LO hasn't had any issues with it.

  • We use the similac supplementing formula with no issue. We tried the enfamil but it has less water than similac and gave her constipation issues.
  • We use enfamil gentle ease with no issues. She gets half pumped milk and half formula daily (supply issues). She's eating like a little pig!

  • I wouldn't get hung up on what you should use for supplementing, I would find what agrees with your LO, and that is just trial and error. We use enfamil gentle ease, but tried a few different ones first.

Of course that is my plan but I was interested in first hand experiences since there are so many different formulas out there. It can be over whelming!

  • Our 5th try was Gerber Soothe and it works well.
  • I just used all of my different samples for supplementing in the beginning and then switched to CVS brand formula when I had to buy some.

Never had an issue switching it up like that with DD1 and that's my plan with DD2

  • We are having some sevre constipation issues, we are using probiotics and apple juice. Still no poo, I have to use the thermometer to stimulate him. Anyone have any new tricks that I'm not aware of?
  • I'm using Enfamil Newborn, just because I got like 4 tubs of free samples. But so far LO likes it. Had to supplement cause I can't keep up with her appetite. I'm pumping like crazy trying. But all of her feedings are 50/50 BM and formula.

  • We are using earths best organic for fussiness and gas. It was important for me to have organic and it seems to be easier on her tummy. I am having to supplement and so far it's been working for us.

DS1 went almost 3 weeks without pooping. He wasn't in pain, didn't have a distended(?) bowel or anything. He said it wasn't uncommon with BF babies since there is much less waste with breast milk than formula. Doc ended up giving him a laxative powder that I mixed and gave him. Talk about projectile pooping!!!
