Not again! Pitting Edema Vent

Anyone else have this? It sucks!

I had a horrible case of swelling and pitting edema when I was pregnant with DS 7 years ago. Bad enough that they were concerned I was heading towards Pre-E and I ended up getting put on medical leave from work 10 weeks before my due date. This started an endless string of BP checks and NSTs (=no fun). For this reason, I've been hoping to keep my health up and my weight down, to avoid this. No such luck. 31 weeks tomorrow and right on schedule, guess what just hit? Definite pitting.

The next few weeks are going to be miserable if this sticks around :(

  • Man, I'm sorry to hear that. I have no experience but hoping it goes away soon for you!

  • @jalara48‌ - No physical restrictions. My pregnancy has been super smooth sailing up until now, save for a little sciatic pain but that I can deal with. I actually feel better pregnant than I do not pregnant because I don't get Endometriosis flare ups (so no chronic pelvic pain). I've been pretty active, but the last few days I've had increasing pressure on my pelvis because baby is head down now and all bunched up down low. My guess is, this just creates too much pressure and I swell up. *sigh*. Good thing I found my portable BP cuff the other day just in case :P

Oh yes we are friends. I only have gained 19 pounds and I have gained one in 4 weeks. I wonder where it is going because I would think I would have appeared to have gained more from swelling

Ob says edema below the waist is ok. Watch for high bp, above the waist and sudden.image
  • If my feet are down for any length of time w/o compression socks I get pitting edema.  It's been so fun (not).  I've only had one random high BP so far, and my next appt is on Monday.  I'm hoping the BP is back down.  We shall see.

  • @Justabean3‌ - You have my sympathies! We discovered it by accident when I was pregnant with DS. I was sitting cross-legged and when I went to stand up it looked like there was a huge bite taken out of my calf! Freaked poor hubby out really bad. FX yours doesn't get any worse!

  • For anyone else that gets it.... One thing to note is what your average BP usually is. The 120/80 never applied to me because my BP has always run low. They induced me during my first pregnancy because my BP was getting "too high for me". I believe it was 134/85... Not too high for most people, but WAY out of my range. Just an FYI for those that might not know if/when to consult their doc.

  • The worst part for me is just the tightening but my baby is sitting unbelievable low so I think that is the cause. image

  • I haven't tried actual compression socks but I wear knee socks a lot and it makes it worse

Maybe I'll try actual c socks. What would be the difference?

I will keep this is mind. Mine today was 100/60 (I run low also) so if I see it get up there then I will call. I probably wouldn't have thought about it
  • That is a bummer. Good luck!
  • I had it with my last pregnancy, monitored my BP for two months, was diagnosed with PIH and induced. I've already had one high BP reading and the edema from calf down this pregnancy. I'm not concerned, but I feel gross in my sandals- which are the only shoes that fit.
  • Had it really bad with DD1. Nothing with DD2. And knock on wood... Nothing so far with DS. I feel for you. It got to the point with DD1 where the only thing that sort of fit were crocs.

  • I was suspicious of this today for me. I have had a really bad headache all day, also my feet and legs have been swelling for the past 3 weeks or so. But here lately I have been seeing floaters and having what I thought was BH. Also my mouth had been really dry all day. I checked my BP earlier and it was 129/76, but it is normally like 118/64. I didn't think this was considered a high BP so I thought well maybe I am just feeling bad. Now you have me wondering because I can do that with my feet that you did with your legs.

Definitely keep an eye on your BP and consult your doctor if it keeps trending upwards! It sounds like you are starting to show a few possible warning signs for Pre-E (headache, swelling, high BP) and you don't want to panic, but you do want to have yourself checked if it gets worse.

  • Thank you! I have a DR appt. Wednesday and am going to ask him about my symptoms and see if he will go ahead and put me off work since I have disability insurance. If things get worse before then I will definitely call.
