Pregnant after a Loss

Fresh from TTCAL with hypoglycemia

So I am completely fresh to this board as I just got my BFP#2 yesterday morning, the day AF happily did not arrive. So I am only 4 weeks 1 day and already kind of freaking out. I had a gut feeling that I was pregnant last week as I had been feeling sick in the same way I was sick about 4 weeks during my last pregnancy. (Bit of background: I suffered a complete miscarriage on 6/16/2014 after spending 4-5 hours in the ER at 7weeks 1 day.) I was diagnosed with Hypoglycemia in 2009, primarily triggered by stress. So I thought that being only a week after conception that it seemed too early for me to have morning sickness, I got the crazy idea to check my blood sugar since I wasn't feeling well. (My hypoglycemia is just diet controlled and I don't usually monitor my blood sugar alot as I typically only got sick in the mornings after not eating while I am sleeping...) My blood sugar was in the 50's. So I took the HPT yesterday morning and called my OB to talk to a nurse about my blood sugar. She told me that I should be eating 6 small meals a day and eating lots of protein. I feel like all I do is eat all day for the last two days.

I guess part of my question is any ideas on snacks that other's have that are good for protein because eventually I am going to get burnt out on the cottage cheese or yogurt or regular cheese?

One of the first things I read after making the move to the board was the mantra, while I am a bit terrified about my last experience being repeated I try to concentrate on the fact that right now I am pregnant. Kind of hard to imagine what it will be like considering when I had my miscarriage my body hadn't really changed in any way. And I got my last ER bill today so nothing like a slap in the face reminder this morning while trying to keep my excitement about having a child this time underwraps as I am not ready to tell a bunch of people. But like the TTCAL board I felt better knowing that there are other people out there experiencing the same things, that what I am feeling is 'normal' and sometimes you just need a good excuse when people look at you weird for randomly crying. I found support with the other ladies and hoping to get stuck on this board for 9 months!!

Re: Fresh from TTCAL with hypoglycemia

  • Congratulations and welcome :).  Here's a good link for foods that are low glycemic: https://bembu.com/low-glycemic-foods.  Some of my favorites are: apples and peanut butter(read the label - a lot of brands have added sugar, salt, etc. I find the Trader Joe's unsalted creamy or crunchy peanut butter or almond butter is my favorite go-to), home made hummus and veggies (again, because a lot of store brands have added ingredients and it's SO easy and cheap to make your own), fresh berries, greek yogurt, and hard boiled eggs.

  • Congrats and welcome!  Some of the high protein snacks that I eat besides cheese and greek yogurt are peanut butter with carrots/wheat crackers/apples, almonds or cashews, and edamame,  I also add hard boiled eggs, sunflower seeds, nuts, and cheese to salads for lunch a few times/week.

  • @RN536 : Start my day off with eggs, yummy and easy protein. I did wake up feeling sick and went for some milk but sometimes the sugar can be too much.

@shell041783 : I think peanut butter will not be a problem, just need a spoon and a jar some days ;) Been slowly trying the greek yogurt, actually found out about my condition because I was eating regular yogurt and it was making me sick every morning because of the sugar, but the greek yogurt hasn't been as bad.

@carlsonbaby2014 : thanks for the link, I've read a lot about almond butter but never given it a try, might have to....

@meagpt22 : I've also read about protein bars, I assume the granola bars are similar if you find one that has some protein in it...

@megdowntheshore : I will have to check with my insurance provider, but if worse comes to worse I will just eat a lot of cheese. Which shouldn't be hard because I craved it the first pregnancy.

@momtobe85 : I have been randomly snacking on almonds, love them! And I too am worried about the burn out of cottage cheese, but right now goes good with fresh tomatoes from my garden

@qanda2013 and everyone, thank you so much for the welcome and congratulations! Actually just so nice to be able to tell someone besides my husband...

  • Congratulations and welcome! Some easy sources of protein are protein-enhanced smoothies, peanut butter, almonds, edamame, etc. You didn't list any meat sources, so not sure if you're vegetarian or not; if you're not vegetarian, then fish or lean meats with crackers could make for a good snack, too.

  • @haleyusf : I am not a vergetarian, probably the opposite. Have been eating more chicken and have only vaguely considered whether I could add protein to my morning 'smoothies' (I just throw strawberries, bananas and/pears in my Magic Bullet for breakfast)

  • Sllinge - you can definitely add protein to your smoothies! A scoop of peanut butter would do the trick if you want a simple solution, or yogurt, chia seeds (great for other vitamins/minerals and fiber), etc. But if you can find a protein powder that has about 10g per serving, that would be a good addition. You don't want to go too high in protein per serving because that can tax the kidneys which are already working more during pregnancy.
