Trouble TTC

Intro and question re: clomid vs letrozole

DH and I are both 38, ttc #1, for about 4 or so months.  We stopped "not trying" when we got married in October.  Sought out an RE in March, and have since been diagnosed with DOR.  My FSH has come back extremely high the last two months, 42 and 43.  Otherwise, everything else is in working order.  Doc surprised by such an elevated FSH, but I also have only one full ovary (other removed due to cyst in 2001).  I have responded to 2 cycles of clomid, producing 2-3 follicles, which also surprised my RE.  I was triggered with Ovidrel both time, and unfortunately both IUI's failed.  I am on CD1, going for another IUI cycle and have asked my RE to switch me to letrozole because I have heard it has been linked to success in women with higher FSH.

Does anyone have any personal experience, or information related to these two drugs?

Re: Intro and question re: clomid vs letrozole

  • I've been on letrozole 4 cycles. I've had minimal side effects & had 2 good follicles each time. Never been on Clomid, but hear letrozole has less side effects in general.

  • Welcome to 3T! You've come to the right place for advice and support.

Clomid works better for me personally but I've heard LOTS of other ladies here say that letrozole (femara) has worked better for them with fewer side effects.

Just a question, if you're responding well to clomid, why are you looking to switch? Seems like, with 2-3 follies, you're already pretty successful!

Good luck with IUI #3. Third time's a charm, right?

  • Glad you were ovulating so successfully! I'd love to get 2-3 follies. :)

Wow, I had never heard that Letrozole was more successful that Clomid with DOR. That's awesome though, I hope your RE agrees!

I used Letrozole for one cycle (and about to start another), and it's so mild that I don't feel sorry for myself that I have to take it (that's kind of my measure, Lol, as I tend to wallow in self-pity over this IF thing at times). :) Hopefully you'll have a good experience with it and not be here much longer!

  • Welcome and good luck! I have no advice about letrozole and DOR but for me I have few to no side effects from letrozole. Clomid was an awful experience for me and I don't know how I responded to it. I normally get 1 or 2 follies from letrozole but I am at max dose right now.

  • Welcome and good luck!  I've only tried letrozole because I get crazy pants right before my period and was worried clomid would worsen my PMS.  With letrozole, I got hot flashes and headaches but responded both time with one follicle.

  • Thank you all for the responses. I've read so much researching online but each article contradicts the next it seems. @AnnaClaire256‌ just want to try something else, see if there is any difference, mainly because my RE said that if I produce 3+ mature follies we can go right to retrieval for IVF. He doesn't feel that starting me on the IVF drugs will be beneficial for me since all it really is is slamming your body with FSH and I'm already filled to the brim :(. I guess trying to find home in something.
