Migraines/headaches during pregnancy

Hi- new to the discussion board but desperate for advice on this topic. I'm 15 weeks pregnant with number 2, first pregnancy was a breeze. First off, I've always dealt with migraines unfortunately but over the last 4 months I have had some of my worst migraines and they are seemingly getting more frequent and I'm at a loss. I have a toddler with no help close by and OB suggesting taking Butal, Tylenol caffeine pills which I have and sometimes they work but when they are really bad, they don't work at all. I hate taking meds while pregnant but they constantly reassure me the baby will be fine. :( Ive met with an acupuncturist and going to see a neurologist but it's been so tough and really hoping someone has some advice or anything to offer. I just pray this little one is strong enough to take what I've been having to throw at him/her to get through yet another headache. Please any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  • Have you been to a dentist lately? I only ask because I clentch my teeth (which I didn't realise I did) so hard that it causes bad head aches. Also maybe a massage? Do you get it after eating certain things? ie. dairy

  • I have not been to a dentist recently but know I do tend to clench my teeth... Plus have to crack my jaw every morning I wake up but that was due to an accident when I was in my teens. I haven't been able to nail down anything that triggers my migraines food wise. I've had them since I was really young and started to take meds to help prevent them about 10 years ago which helped but obviously can't take them now. I've done massages but only seems to help a little.
  • Hi there, I have been a migraine sufferer for 15 years and have been on prescription meds for 13 years! I also have had some of the worst migraines during my pregnancy where I have no alternative but to take my prescription medication along with numerous trips to The Emergency Room. Dont be scared to take medication during pregnancy. Your health and sanity are needed for baby to be healthy as well. Have you looked up migraine  trigger foods? I literally have a list of foods on my fridge that I absolutly cannot consume as they bring on migraines. Changing my diet has helped a lot. I am also currently seeing a miggraine accumpucturist and i have had about 20 treatments so far and am just starting to see a difference. I am currently very content with my 1-2 migraines a week compared to 4-5. Also look into migraine breathing excercises. I do them daily and honestly feel like they have made a difference as well. Hope this helps a little! stay strong.. I know the feeling!
  • Headaches and migraines tend to happen with pregnancy. Totally normal. Sorry they are really bad, I would ask your OB about it.
  • I tried to be caffeine free as long as I could. By week 12, I threw in the towel. At my checkup I talked to the doctor about them and he's all do you drink caffeine at all? I said no and he said you can drink under 200mg a day. So, ever since I have had caffeine during the day and the headaches have gone away. I understand people have personal preferences. Lavender and peppermint oil worked on my temples as well as a cold face mask when laying down trying to knock the migraine out. Tylenol did absolutely nothing.

  • Try drinking a small glass (maybe like 1/2 cup or so) of pickle juice or apple cider vinegar! I know it will not taste great, but I used it in my first pregnancy and have had to use it again for migraines because I prefer not taking medicine while pregnant. In my first pregnancy I told my Granny she was flat out crazy when she suggested it to me, she just said "wait and see" and she was right, it works better than anything I've ever been prescribed for them. It will take about 10-15 minutes to kick in but it works!
