Using Family Names

Hi everyone! After going through a book of 25,000 boy names, my hubby and I were thinking about going with a family name because nothing else was really sparking for us.  We loved it for a day and then I started to get major second doubts....like is this too OLD school? Like way old? I would love any opinions on it because I'm really feeling conflicted on the sentiment vs. practicality of such an old name.

Reynold with the nickname Ren (my grandpa went by Rey and that feels decidedly ancient).

I was thinking Ren was cool, and made up for Reynold. There is the obvious connotation to Ren and Stimpy, but I am ok with that since every name out there has some random association with it.

Does anyone this this is totally ridiculous in our "modern" age?  So appreciate any honest feedback because I am 100% totally on the fence!

Re: Using Family Names

  • Hmmm...excellent advice!! Thank you! Maybe he'll be an "old soul" and the name will work while young too :)

Do you have any names picked out? Are you doing a family name or something new?

Any other bumpies considering old school names?

  • I see Reynold and I think Reynard the fox.

    I like it :)

  • I am firmly in the pro-family-names camp. (Which is not to say I'm anti names-that-you-just-like.) I love when there is a weight & significance behind the name. Besides, everything old eventually becomes new.

What can you see yourself calling out the front door when the street lights come on and it's time to come home?
  • We didn't have any family names really loved for first names but middle names will be family names.
  • I think Reynold is great.  While I do like Ren, I think if I were naming my son Reynald, I would nickname him Reyn.  Also, "old names" are really the trend right now... at least that's what I see.

  • I'm all about family names. We've been going through the family tree looking for options. I'm settled on Magnolia Wenn or Iris Wendell using DHs grandmothers names and my grandfathers middle name

  • My old school name, which isn't 100% locked in, is Steele Ancram. Both are family names that are for people who meant/mean a lot to me.

Compared to that doozie, Reynold doesn't sound all that old, huh??? lol
  • reynold is totes cute and stately. I like it.

I think it depends on the pronunciation. If it's pronounced Ren-ald (that's how I pronounce it), or if it's Ray-nald, or Rayn-ald. Sorry, I seriously suck at phonetically spelling names. I hope that made sense.

This is true, @sassquatch  I guess I read it as Ray-nald.  I do like both the Ren and Rey pronunciations though! :)

  • I would pronounce it Renn-old, as in Ryan Reynolds
  • Our DS has 3 family names. His first name has never been in the top anything. And I've never met anyone with his name. But it was my great grandfathers name and fits my son very well.

If we have a boybthe middle names will be family names, no first names yet. And if its a girl it will be either 2 family names, or a family name and a friends middle name. We don't have a first name for girl either.
