Trouble TTC

N3TR Car Shopping Woes

I hate car shopping.  The thought of a car payment wants to make me vomit.  And the option are endless.  H has made researching a job and he's frankly driving me crazy.  I vote we go back to horse and buggy.  Lawn gets mowed, garden gets fertilizer and I don't need to worry about a car payment, recalls and IHHS safety ratings.  I think the Amish may be onto something here.   I drank all the wine after getting home from the 4 hour ordeal (in my old car) and moved into the vodka.  *softly bangs head against wall*  We're going back out again tomorrow and H is determined that we're going to make a decision tomorrow.   :((

  • I feel for you. My husband is the same way, he researches and researches to death. Just keep telling yourself, "I love him, I love him...." It's what gets me through. LoL Good Luck!

  • My H is the same way but the good thing is he does all the research and I just tell him the cars I like! Then he goes to the computer and looks everything up! I hope you make a decision today and get your new car! (I understand about the payment though; mine is paid off now and I plan on driving it until it dies so I don't have a payment for a long time!)

  • I'm such a researcher. I need a new car myself and have been researching a little here and there for a yr now. Were going to buy something towards the end of the year. Were waiting to see how IVF goes first and the thought of a car note just makes my skin crawl. They money I spent on fertility treatments I could have bought the Lexus I want out right.

The car I'm driving a honda accord that is 10 yrs old with 167k miles, I drive cars until I can't. My car prob has another 100k miles left in it but I'm hoping to upgrade when I get pregnant. I'm actually only on my 4th car since I got my 1st at 16 and I'm 40 now. When I bought my car that I have now I researched and picked out exactly what car I wanted, I knew the features and I bought it without stepping foot at the car dealership. I actually called the dealership talked to a sales person told him exactly what I wanted, he told me the colors he had in that model. I picked the color he brought it to my office, I drove it home for the night and the next day he brought the paperwork to my office and it was mine. Best experience ever!!!!

I never buy anything brand new, I try to find vehicles with 10-20k miles and less than a yr old if possible. Consumer reports has good reviews on cars regarding liablity on cars that have been in service already and it's an excellent place to start looking.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • We just recently bought a new car because my husband's car was nearing its end.  We had a very easy time, because we already knew what we wanted, had our financing set up already, we just needed to test drive, and sign paperwork basically.  My husband didn't drive me crazy researching all of our options, he kept that to himself if he did.  He also insisted I drive the new car, and he took mine.

We haven't had a car payment in a couple of years, so that sucks.

  • The issue we are having is that I know what I want, but H is trying to get me to change my mind and get some crazy sporty performance vehicle that I do not want.  The size scares me due to all the other whack jobs out there on the road not paying attention and the MPG make me want to vomit almost as much as the car note does.  So he's trying to barrage me with stats about horsepower and performance.  I want something safe, reliable and doesn't require a fortune to fuel.  He is a big car person and doesn't seem to understand why I'm not having an orgasm over 0-60 stats and what car and driver rating it has for performance handling.  We have our financing in place through the credit union.  I'm tempted to just swing by the Subaru dealership and buy it myself on the way home, but I'd probably end up sleeping in it if I did that.

  • @kushie77‌ tell your husband to STFU. :-) Men love hearing that.

I am NOT a car person, to me a car is something to get me from point A to point B. I like to do that with the most reliable, safest, and cheapest way possible. I don't give a flying fuck about horsepower, seriously I'm not racing it or pulling anything. Although I do want something I can hook up a small trailer to because I LOVE DIY projects.

My husband wants me to get an expedition and I don't care how many times he tells me this and even though he's paying for it (since I don't work anymore) it's my damn car and I'm driving it not him, so I'm getting what I want.

I vote you go buy what YOU want and go get it on your way home. Just make sure the back seat is comfy to sleep in.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • Ugh I hate car shopping, and not a fan of car salesman (I dated one, trust me on this). Needless to say my H and I fought through the whole process of leasing my car, I just want to know it's going to start when I get in it and not break down, then I'm good.

I'm the researcher in our house. BUT, I got us a fantastic deal and the car we got is so perfect. What kind of car are you looking for? If you're looking for a subcompact, I recommend the Honda Fit. Compact: Toyota Corolla LE or Honda Civic (4 dr) or Hyundai Elantra. Those are two categories I've researched extensively and I have some decent knowledge on. I recommend getting one that is 2-3 years old because then it will have already done most of its depreciation and any mechanical issues will have been spotted already (so not likely to have a recall). PM me if you want more info. Good luck! ETA: FWIW, I have a 2013 Corolla LE and it is a fantastic little car. We were thisclose to buying the Fit, but those subcompacts aren't conducive to a growing family (we keep cars forever, so we will likely have this one for 10 years and our family will be bigger in less time than that, I hope).

  • @theholmanherd

I want a small SUV/Crossover.  It needs to be a little higher up so my mom can get in and out and offer enough room for H to fold his 6'4" frame into it.  I also like the hatchback option to put the dog in the back.  It also has to be big enough to accommodate a car seat without having to become a contortion artist as I will drive this car until either it or myself dies.  Being as I still do per diem home health and we live in NE Pa, I am requiring AWD.  This is why I've narrowed the list down to a Subaru Crosstrek or Forrester or a Ford Escape.  H seems to think that I can shove my mom who has a mobility issue, the dog, a carseat and his tall ass into an 2 door Audi sportster or something else equally idiotic absurd.  I also had a horrible experience with Hyundai in the past and wouldn't drive one if you gave the top of the line model with all the bells and whistles for free.  I'd trade it in for something else.

My DH took waaay too long to find a car. He's been looking for at least 2 months. He was being way to picky. He wanted it less then $5000, and less then 200,000 km (don't ask what it is in miles) which is really hard to find. It had to be a Ford. And had to had to be at least a 5 passenger (well duh, we are ttc!)., but it couldn't be tooo big of a vehicle either. My one request was it CAN NOT BE A MINIVAN!! He finally got a 2003 Ford Escape 2 days ago. He's been as happy as a school boy ever since lol.

Edit: This is a vehicle for him. I'm going to be driving my 2005 Toyota Matrix til it dies lol
*** If you want to know where I (and soo many others) have gone, click here ***
  • Since I'm out of lurkdom on the board today anyways, I'll chime in ;)

I'm the researcher in our family, not DH. I LURVE my Outback!!! We'd been putting off replacing my car (2003 Matrix with 400K on it) for the past few years because of paying for treatments, so I had alot of time to research and test drive to find out exactly what I wanted. I went with the smaller (2.5L) engine and 6sp manual transmission, so it's fantastic on gas! I sacrificed the power a bit on that one, but it still handles like a dream. (I have a long commute, so I needed to save on gas.) It actually gets better MPG than DHs Golf :p That car is a POS. DH bought it without researching, because he liked the way it looked. (He was 27 and it was his first car. What can I say?)

  • We're looking to replace MH's car. He had a 91 volvo, but ended up rear-ending someone and it did too much damage to be worth fixing (giving the age and mileage on it). He wants a wagon, preferably a volkswagen. With a manual transmission and diesel. He keeps putting it off because he doesn't want a car note, but now that the semester is starting back up, sharing a car is getting more and more difficult.

  • My DH is a super researcher as well, and on top of that he's super slow to make up his mind. Since this is your car, I say you get what you want and what you feel comfortable/safe in. It sounds like your DH has sports car fever and is looking more for himself (my DH has also been guilty of this). Maybe he can get an Audi or something for himself when the time comes?
