Yoga (or any type of work out) post partum - when did you start?

I realize we all get cleared at different times, but I'm seeing some people start working out at three weeks postpartum which is where I'm at postpartum but not working out wise. I'm thinking if they can start working out surely I can start yoga. My midwife said not to start til 4 weeks, though I had no complications and no tears, only a big baby. Making myself wait but I so want to get back on the yoga mat!!

Now I'm curious... what, if any, workouts have you returned to? How many weeks postpartum were you when you started and are you now? Did you do the same workout previously? How's the work outs going as far as how you're feeling?

  • My dr told me only walks until 6 weeks :|

  • for yoga - 2 weeks, with no inverted poses (because of bleeding) and a few quick breathers in between.
Had to switch to a lower intensity than pre-baby and wobbled a lot though.

I had a problem-free natural birth with no tearing or anything so could ease back in as soon as I felt ready (according to the MWs). I think I should have given it a bit longer though quite honestly.
  • Please be cautious with your yoga routine and don't push your stretches as we still have a lot of relaxin in our bodies for several weeks postpartum and you can easily stress your ligaments.

Personally I wasn't cleared for any exercise, even light yoga, until 6 weeks but I had a bad tear and then popped my stitches so I was all sorts of messed up.

  • I've been walking and weight lifting. I tried running at 2 weeks PP, and decided I wasn't ready. I'll try again at 4weeks PP. I'm anxious to get going with more intense exercise! I want this extra weight off now!

  • I had a vaginal delivery with a second degree tear. I tried to start light running at 3w PP but found I was having pain in my lower abdomen (uterus?). Elliptical felt fine so I stuck to that for a few days. Running is starting to get better in the last couple days (4w PP). Abdominal exercises are still way too painful in the same place but other weightlifting feels fine. No pain down there luckily.

  • I had a repeat c section. I started really working out when cleared at 6 weeks. Which was monday. I plan to start p90x3 at 8 weeks pp. Just want to give my body time

  • I had a vaginal delivery, second degree tear. I started with walking at I think 1.5 weeks or so. Gradually worked my way up to longer, faster walks then added in yoga, weights and running as I felt ready. I just took it slow and listened to my body. I had my 6 wk checkup earlier this week and everything was fine and my ob was ok with me doing what I did since I was sensible about it.

  • I've just been walking.  I think I started around 4 weeks PP, but picked up the pace around 8 weeks.

  • I'll be 4 weeks pp tomorrow, and I'm starting walking now. I had a 2nd degree tear and then it got infected, so I had to take it really slow.

This! Idk how but I popped my stitches too. I've been walking but the other day I ran one block (just to see how it'd feel) and regretted it for the rest of the evening. Don't push yourselves, ladies!

  • When it's not a freaking oven outside, we'll go on walks around the block. I will be reinstating my gym membership on Friday, and I'll be 7 weeks PP. I like to think caring for a newborn and a toddler was plenty of exercise.
